The original Hades was a fun roguelike that offered an incredible challenge, which is why it's no surprise that many came to love it. Its sequel, Hades 2, had much to live up to, and for all the expectations many put on it, the game certainly met and even exceeded them.
With its official release, many were able to play and see for themselves that the game is truly a masterpiece, one that's potentially even greater than its predecessor. However, great as it may be, I feel like there is one area that it may have taken itself too far.
At some point in the sequel, players will have a choice of tackling either the Underworld or the Surface. The game makes it clear that everyone was meant to go through the former first, and save the latter for another time. However, those who choose to brave the Surface will find that there's a reason it's meant to be revisited later on.
I, as well as many others who've braved the journey to the Summit, can say that the route towards the top is much harder than that of the Underworld's. It poses an incredible challenge, and although it does test one's skills, I believe it does the job too harshly.

The Surface consists of four regions, namely the City of Ephyra, the Rifts of Thessaly, Mount Olympus, and The Summit. Each one is more difficult than the last, so much so that players, especially casuals, will likely see their run end right before closing in on the top.
A good reason for this is that it feels like one has to be very lucky when it comes to obtaining any of Hades 2's Gods during a Surface run. Without the right combination, it can feel almost impossible to overcome areas like Mount Olympus and The Summit, as the enemies there feel way too strong for their own good.
Even with the right Animal Familiars, Keepsakes, and a lot of Death Defiances, there is a huge chance of the run failing unless you have the right Boons. However, even if you do happen to get what you think is the most powerful combination, the Surface will do everything to make sure it doesn't matter, which is honestly frustrating.

There are certain attacks from enemies that feel unavoidable, regardless of how careful you are. This is especially clear when climbing The Summit, as the Wardens blocking the path towards the top can be very unpredictable. That, along with how hard they hit and how long it can take to vanquish them, means losing a lot of life and potentially the run.
Supergiant Games did not hold back on emphasizing that the Surface of Hades 2 is the harder route when compared to the Underworld, but I feel the developer made it too challenging. It took a lot of effort from me to overcome it despite being a veteran of the first game, so I imagine it would be more difficult for those who have little to no experience with the original Hades, or roguelikes in general.
While it can be seen as a way to improve one's skills, the level of difficulty it possesses could deter people from continuing to play the game instead.
