GTA VI is expected to break the current boundaries of gaming by having an open world that other games can’t compete with.
Unfortunately, some of that innovation comes with sacrifice, as this epic sixth installment might launch with 30 fps.
While this is a more than playable state for the game, it will annoy those hoping this generation was about performance.
An ex-Rockstar Games animator, Mike York, spoke with Kiwi Talkz in a now-deleted interview (via VideoGamer) and shut down the option of 60 fps. York feels the game will aim for a locked 30 fps, which means it will never go over or under that. Once again, this technically isn’t an issue, but 60 fps looks and feels better.
“I don’t know if they’ll be able to pull off 60fps,” York said. “I don’t think so. I think they’re gonna be shooting for 30fps – and a locked 30fps, meaning it never dips below that.”
Only time will tell if GTA VI will live up to our lofty expectations, but 30 fps could be a sign that it won’t. While this is a very playable state for most games, the current generation of PS5 and Xbox Series games has spoiled most fans. Even if this game will get good scores, some fans won’t get over this, petty as that sounds.
Maybe GTA VI will follow the same trend as GTA V and be consistently re-released for newer systems like the PS6. By then, Rockstar Games might know how to make this game run at 60 fps.
They might also add new gameplay mechanics, but let’s not speculate since we don’t know what this base game will play like.
