There’s a new sci-fi action-adventure RPG coming and it might be the competition BioWare’s Mass Effect series needs.
If you're a Mass Effect fan, Exodus should be the next game on your radar as it shares many similarities to that Mass Effect fans have always enjoyed: A rich sci-fi universe with higher beings out to destroy humanity, a compelling cast of characters, and a familiar third-person shooter gameplay.

Developed by Archetype Entertainment with the help of Wizards of the Coast for its publishing rights, Exodus is an existing IP that debuted its universe in Amazon’s Secret Level TV Show, where we saw various adaptations of our favorite games including Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine and a dark and twisted take on Pacman.
Set 40,000 years into the future where humanity is on the brink of extinction, players assume the role of Jun Aslan, one of the Travelers designated to lead humanity’s fight for survival against the alien threats known only as the Celestials. If that doesn’t feel like Commander Shepard and the Reapers all over again, I don’t know what is.

Gameplay is pretty much what you'd expect if you’re a fan of the Mass Effect series. The main character has a mix of guns and a special ‘alien energy’ similar to how Mass Effect's Biotic powers work. These are essential weapons to quell Exodus' looming alien threat. Jun Aslan can switch between these on the fly. Additionally, Jun also has his team members to back him up, with the right synergies and skills equipped, they can also help with the firefight with their own set of skills.
What sets Exodus apart from the Mass Effect series, however, is how it is a total upgrade from the third-person combat we’re familiar with. Exodus has stealth mechanics, but it's not the Assassin's Creed-type we're used to. Rather, Jun Aslan can take on enemies with a smack from his guns, reducing one enemy to an encounter. Other than that, he also has access to a grappling hook where he can move quickly from one place to another, evading enemy sightlines and controlling aerial supremacy.
There’s little we don’t know about its exploration yet, but we could speculate that we’re jumping from planet to planet here. Exodus' story is about finding age old alien relics, and there's bound to be some interstellar travel involved here. We might even get our own version of the Normandy ship and use it to travel to interstellar distances. As a huge Mass Effect fan, I have yet to see Exodus’ version of a hub city like the Citadel.

Exodus has no release date yet, but we could be expecting a 2026 window when everything works out well. If that’s the case, then it might go toe to toe against another Mass Effect-like game from Owlcat Studios, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, based on the hit Hugo Award Winning Novels from James S.A. Corey and the Amazon TV show.
As a huge fan of games like these, I’m looking forward to getting my hands on both games. I’d say 2026 is already looking like a great year for gaming, and if BioWare decided to announce more details about the next Mass Effect this year, then we’re going to be in for a stellar 2026.
