Elden Ring Never Had Peak Performance, Switch 2 Players Should Rest Easy

Elden Ring with Switch 2

Reports of Elden Ring’s supposedly poor handheld performance on Switch 2 made the rounds last week, with fans wondering if the system can really be considered current-gen. The reports were disappointing, but fans took solace in the fact that this port doesn’t have a release date yet, so patches can make it play better before it launches.

Interestingly, some fans on X were quick to point out how this open-world FromSoftware RPG never really had peak performance in any of its systems, at least not at launch. Everything from the PS5 to the Xbox Series, and even strong computers, had a hard time running this Souslike giant. Most fans even considered it unplayable on Steam Deck until it was all patched up.

There’s a very good chance that Elden Ring will still run well on Switch 2 when the game launches. While those reports might be accurate, let’s not act like they’re the end of the world.

Handheld Elden Ring

We’ll cut FromSoftware some slack when it comes to Elden Ring on Switch 2, since this is the first time they’re porting this massive game to a handheld console. Some fans might bring up the Steam Deck, but that’s essentially a PC, so porting this version wasn’t as precise. And like we mentioned earlier, this open-world title struggled on systems stronger than the Deck as well.

Fans showing concern over the Switch 2 version shouldn’t beat themselves up about it, as the technology is still fairly new to a lot of developers. CD Projekt Red might have been able to get Cyberpunk 2077 running on it, but the DLC struggled for a while. Once developers start becoming more comfortable with this machine, we think these ports will start being optimized better.

Performance Problems Everywhere

It wasn’t that long ago when Elden Ring fans were complaining about this game’s PS5 and Xbox Series performance. Considering how this game is also available on PS4 and Xbox One, we can’t imagine how much of a struggle this RPG was on those last-gen platforms. Fans have shown that they run well on these systems, but that was likely due to patches that were released across the board.

Performance issues can be depressing to some, but most fans got over it once they actually started playing Elden Ring. Even to this day, the open-world RPG offers an experience unlike any other open-world title out there, which is why many consider it a masterpiece. Getting lost, then randomly getting into epic boss fights, is just as thrilling now as it was a few years ago.

FromSoftware are masters at their craft, so we’re sure Elden Ring will eventually perform well on Switch 2. There’s still no release date, so fans shouldn’t panic too much. If there’s anything we should learn from the development time of Hollow Knight: Silksong, it’s that we need to let these developers cook, as the kids like to say.
