Valve, the developers behind the popular MOBA game Dota 2, just unveiled a major crossover collaboration with Capcom’s long-running action RPG, Monster Hunter.

This new event offers players an interesting twist to the Dota 2 formula by adding a Monster Hunter twist, as well as rewarding players with the series’ iconic armors to match Valve’s selection of heroes.

The latest Monster Hunter x Dota 2 collaboration adds a whole new gameplay loop for players. It plays similarly to Monster Hunter games, where players need to farm materials to craft armor and weapons. This crossover with Dota 2 leans in on that direction.

Slay a hero to get materials.

Getting materials is easy; players will only need to play regular matches and slay heroes. Each slain hero has their own material drop. For example, slaying Pudge or Drow Ranger guarantees a Wyvern Gem to drop.

There is always a material drop from every hero slain. You can always click on the item to check which type of hero drops it. Rarer drops, like the Palico Voucher, can only be dropped as a match reward, with potentially more chances after a victory.

Other cosmetics, like the Palico Courier and a Poogie effigy pit, are also around. Of course, players would need to craft them first.

Crafting the Monster Hunter skins takes time, which is pretty standard for a Monster Hunter game. As players grind through resources and materials from slain heroes, they need to gather a specific number to craft each of the six major armors:

  • Sniper acquires the Odogaron Armor
  • Techies acquires the Palico Disguise Bomb Unit Armor
  • Anti-Mage receives the Kirin Armor (including the signature horn)
  • Dragon Knight has the Rathalos Armor
  • Beastmaster has Bone Armor
  • Windranger has the Zinogre Armor

Each of the six armor pieces will have its own materials needed for crafting. The Odogaron Armor for Sniper requires you to slay heroes that drop Odogaron material like Scales and Wyvern Gems. Simply hovering over the required material will tell you which hero to target.

The base version for the Monster Hunter cosmetics can also be used to change its variant by purchasing the premium tier, Expedition Pack. Once players craft one of the Monster Hunter-themed cosmetics, players can build on another variant of their preference. That means grinding materials again, obviously.

The Monster Hunter collaboration is an unexpected surprise, considering that both games offer two distinct gameplay styles. Granted, Dota 2 has had odd crossovers before, like Rick & Morty, but this one takes the cake for being a major third-party event.

Fans are also bewildered by its lack of iconic monsters in-game. Some expected they would see Rathalos somewhere in the game, or Broodmother as Lala Barina.
