ARC Raiders continue to surprise players with its dynamic breadth of content. After it sold over 4 million copies since launch, Embark’s extraction shooter has only just begun.
With its mix of PvE and PvP elements, many players are wondering what kind of matchmaking system ARC Raiders is using. Let’s weigh in.
Is ARC Raiders Using Skill-Based Matchmaking?

ARC Raiders does not use any form of skill-based matchmaking. Unlike multiplayer shooters like Battlefield 6, implementing SBMM in ARC Raiders wouldn’t make sense, as it’s an extraction shooter where the gameplay is to scavenge for rare items and extract safely. The PvP is just icing on the cake.
Adding SBMM would create a major disparity among players, causing a huge rift between its PvE and PvP mechanics. It would only embolden other players to hunt other Raiders with little to no remorse.
Since many players already struggle with the game’s hostile PvP environment, SBMM would only make things harder for casual players seeking a more relaxed extraction experience.
What Matchmaking is ARC Raiders Using?

ARC Raiders’ developer, Embark, has confirmed that it is only using matchmaking exclusively for group size. This means solo players are queued with other solos, duos with duos, and squads with squads.
Although there are still issues where some duos can encounter a full squad of three, everything seems to be okay for solo players. In fact, they might even have the chillest playerbase, as some solo players tend to be friendlier compared to duos and squads.
Is ARC Raiders Using Gear Score Matchmaking?
ARC Raiders has no gear score matchmaking. Before launch, Embark did consider a gear-based matchmaking system where players would only be matched with others who had similar loot. For example, players with legendary or epic weapons would face others with gear of equal rarity. While not technically SBMM, it follows the same concept of matching players with similar advantages.
Gear score matchmaking has been shelved for now. According to an Embark announcement on the official ARC Raiders Discord server, the developers have prioritized group size matchmaking instead.
Will ARC Raiders Separate PvE and PvP Modes?

A common question among the community is whether Embark plans to separate PvE and PvP modes. While they have been completely mum about it, most players are believe that the game should stick to its mix of PvE and PvP, otherwise it would take away what makes ARC Raiders great.
Splitting PvE and PvP modes can also cause a divide in its playerbase, leading to longer queue times and matchmaking issues, which is not something players would want.
And that’s about it. ARC Raiders does not have any skill-based or gear-based matchmaking. Maybe in the future, Embark will consider it, but for now, the priority is to queue players with equal group sizes.
