Control: Resonant was one of last year’s biggest surprise reveals. While most Remedy fans were already aware that a Control sequel was coming, a full reveal trailer at The Game Awards wasn’t something they expected.
The Control: Resonant reveal gave us a glimpse into Remedy’s twisted sequel to one of 2019’s best action titles. It introduces a new protagonist, Dylan Faden, who takes matters into his own hands after his sister’s mysterious disappearance.
Remedy Entertainment recently stated that this game is not a “safe sequel,” pushing the limits of their Northlight Engine with its semi-open world format. Unlike the original Control, where Dylan’s sister, Jesse Faden, navigates through the labyrinthine halls of the Federal Bureau of Control, Dylan explores a warped Manhattan overwhelmed by a myriad of alien threats.

Fans believe that this might recapture InFAMOUS’ style of open-ended exploration. Sucker Punch Studios, creators of the hit Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei, was one of the early mid-2000s studios that put the power fantasy at its center. InFAMOUS was known for its open-world playground where protagonists like Cole traverse rooftops and buildings, wreaking havoc across the city.
There was magic in InFAMOUS’ approach to a player-driven adventure. It was the kind of game most players would simply hop in and mess around the game’s world once the story was over.
Control: Resonant is no different. With Dylan Faden’s latent paranatural powers, he can wield his weapon, The Aberrant, to quell Manhattan’s Lovecraftian mobs in its melee-focused combat. To add to that, the Control sequel continues to embrace the original’s physics-driven gameplay interactions like potentially destructible environments.

While Remedy hasn’t shown us the full extent of Dylan’s powers yet, the reveal trailer gave us a glimpse into what he can do. His destructive powers make combat and traversal promising thanks to his shape-shifting weapon. Although it’s not confirmed that he will share Jesse’s levitation ability, we’re hoping that Remedy surprises us with that kind of power, as his threats are far more powerful than his sister’s.
Control: Resonant relies heavily on the weirder side of science fiction, whereas InFAMOUS was all about being good and bad. What both games have in common is the persistent superhero-like appeal that turns our protagonists into one-man armies, decimating foes left and right.

Fans of other open-world action games like Radical Entertainment’s Prototype series could also find something similar in Control: Resonant’s style. Both games share that dark and gritty combat with brooding protagonists. While it’s not a direct 1:1 comparison, those who miss Alex Mercer and James Heller’s stories will have their scratches itched.
All of this is speculative as Remedy Entertainment has yet to reveal more gameplay for Control: Resonant, but the parallels are striking enough to warrant comparisons. Whether this appeals to fans of InFAMOUS or not, what Control: Resonant will have could rekindle that magic of playing as a super-powered protagonist wreaking havoc across the city.
