Black Ops Cold War: Cross-Play And Cross-Platform Details For Multiplayer And Warzone On PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5 And Xbox One

The most ambitious cross-over of all time.

Black Ops Cold War will release on the schedule this week and like its predecessor, Modern Warfare, it will feature cross-platform play.

Cross-play was introduced into the Call of Duty franchise for the first time last year and has been a big hit with fans.

With Warzone remaining and acting as a cornerstone of this year's release.

Will Black Ops Cold War Have Cross-Platform Play?

Yes, Black Ops Cold War will feature cross-play.

It's very logical, despite Activision not confirming it officially (it probably doesn't need to be confirmed at this point) @ModernWarzone has confirmed this on Twitter. The notorious leaker has been very reliable for inside information on the latest Call of Duty project and has likely had it confirmed, despite not elaborating more on it.

Will Black Ops Cold War Multiplayer And Warzone Be Cross-Platform?

Yes, multiplayer and Warzone will be cross-platform.

Although Activision has yet to say anything publicly, it would be a huge shock to see them retreat and go back to segregating platforms.

To play Warzone, players will need a COD accounts to play, this is how players have been able to play both Multiplayer and Warzone cross-platform.

If Activision aims to keep Warzone rolling over into each new Call of Duty, creating a universal experience, they will need to enable cross-platform play.

Will It Be Black Ops Cold War Cross-Generational?

This is the big question - will the game be cross-generational?

Call of Duty's first cross-platform experience has been a success, but can that continue into the next generation of consoles?

Will Xbox One and Xbox Series X players be able to battle it out in the Gulag against one another? Will PS4 and PS5 players be able to storm Verdansk together?

Will Xbox One and PS4 players be able to mix with Xbox Series X and PS5 players? It's very much up in the air at the moment.

It seems like it's within the realms of possibility to have current generation consoles, next-generation consoles and PC players all play together.

If not, how will it work? Will console generations be separated into their own servers? How will that effect the PC crowd? Could they jump back and forth?

Possibly, for the time being, the games cater to cross-generational play before moving away in future releases.

As the games grow and technology evolves, less and less time will be spent on the older generation versions. If you remember playing Black Ops 3 on the PS3 or Xbox 360, the game was extremely scaled back.

Most players will have converted to the new console by then meaning there would be no reason to invest resources into the older generation.

How Does It Work?

You Can Opt-In Or Out

Players can choose to enable cross-play, allowing you to play with all three supported platforms (Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC).

Whether this option extends to Xbox Series X and PS5 is unknown.

A Cod Account Is Needed

You need a COD Account to play Modern Warfare 2019 (you can create one here). Your COD account replaces your regular platform login, you can customise this how you want (meaning you can change your display name to differ from your usual GamerTag/PSN/Battle.net ID).

By having this, it will allow you to play across different platforms and party up with players on different platforms.

Matchmaking And Balancing

Black Ops Cold War has been designed to balance the playing field and keep things fair between the different console types. Here are some settings you should know about:

  • You can decide to use keyboard and mouse on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One
  • You can decide to use a controller on PC
  • PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC players can all play against each other, provided they all utilize controllers or a keyboard and mouse
  • You can place into a lobby where there are no control scheme filters, allowing you to play with players using both controllers and keyboard and mouse across all three platforms
  • Wait times for lobbies will decrease with the increased player pool

Cross-Play Applicable Modes

We assume all public game modes will support multiplayer cross-play at this point in time. It's unknown if ranked play or competitive tournaments will support this feature when the game arrives

Cross-Platform Progression

All of your progress will carry over between different platforms.
