How’s everyone enjoying their first day of Hollow Knight: Silksong? So far, things have been going well. While everyone’s out there dipping their toes into Pharloom for the first time, I’ve been having the most fun meeting the new NPCs in my 5 hours of playtime. This eccentric bunch each has their own quirks and motivations, just like the residents of Hallownest did in the original Hollow Knight.
Now that I’ve seen most of the early game’s few hours, I’ve grown attached to these five NPCs. Every time I cross paths with them, I feel a growing sense of familiarity that I really appreciate.
Here are my five favorite NPCs in Hollow Knight: Silksong right now, and why we must protect them at all costs.
Sherma

The first major NPC you meet is little Sherma, one of the many Pilgrims in Pharloom making her way to the Citadel, the capital of the land. At first, she may not seem like much, but you’ll instantly notice her once you hear the clanging of her percussion instrument paired with her catchy singing voice.
Even if the lyrics are gibberish, her songs add a sense of calmness, and her upbeat personality shines in contrast to the game’s often gloomy atmosphere. Her journey as a Pilgrim is carried by optimism, and that optimism is contagious.
I haven’t encountered her too many times yet, but whenever she appears, she lifts the spirits of other Pilgrims with her music, helping them stave off the madness that curses the land.
For me, Sherma fills a similar role to Quirrel from the original game. Both bring lighthearted moments into Team Cherry’s bleak worlds, and both are the kind of characters you just want to see happy.
Shakra

Silksong’s answer to Cornifer, Shakra is a cartographer by day and a hardcore warrior by night. The moment I heard her melody, they were stuck in my head. She’s also one of the most important NPCs in the game, as she sells essential items like Maps.
You’ll encounter her early on, so make sure you’ve saved up at least 200 Rosaries to grab other essentials like the Compass, a Quill, and Ink.
Shakra feels like a mix of Cornifer and Quirrel. She’s a reliable merchant, but she’s also capable of lending a hand during certain encounters later in the game. When she isn’t selling items, she wields her ring blades like a true warrior, making her one of the coolest characters you’ll meet.
The Bell Beast Bug

Similar to the Last Stag in Hollow Knight, the Bell Beast Bug is your go-to fast travel companion this time around. Unfortunately, this bug doesn’t speak, so you won’t get the same lore-filled conversations you once had with the Last Stag.
The Bell Beast Bug might have less personality, but he’s still essential. Although I’ll admit, the first boss fight against him was pretty frustrating, especially while still adjusting to Hornet’s new controls.
Sir Garmond and Zaza

Meeting Sir Garmond and his pet Zaza instantly reminded me of Zote from the first game. The difference is that Sir Garmond is actually competent, and with Zaza by his side, they make quite the duo.
They’re tied to one of Silksong’s new mechanics, where you can request help from certain NPCs to tackle major boss fights. It’s similar to how summoning allies works in Soulslike games, such as Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.
I haven’t seen much of their story yet, but so far, they’ve already become one of my favorite positive forces in Pharloom.
Lace

An instant favorite. Lace quickly became one of my standout characters in Silksong and, honestly, across the whole Hollow Knight series. She feels like the spiritual successor to Hornet’s role in the first game, except now Hornet is the main character, and Lace takes on the role of rival and first real skill check.
With her snarky personality and brutal parries, Lace is a constant reminder not to get too comfortable. She taunts you when you lose and forces you to sharpen your skills. She’s a true foil to Hornet’s journey, and I can’t wait to see more of her as the story unfolds.
And that’s about it. There are still plenty more NPCs waiting to be discovered in Silksong, but these five have already won me over. I just hope nothing bad happens to them. Though knowing how Team Cherry tells their stories, I’ll keep my expectations in check.
