If you needed any excuse to go back and replay The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, how does playing it on VR sound?
Well, now, thanks to the efforts of talented enthusiasts, you can do just that with the free, open-source BOTW VR Mod for the Wii U version of the game. It was developed by Crementif, taking over five years to finalize.
With the mod, you'll be able to experience Breath of the Wild entirely in VR. It leverages your headset's motion controls to solve puzzles, start fires, or equip/throw weapons, making the experience that much more immersive.
Of course, there are some caveats you need to understand before dipping your toes into the world of Hyrule in virtual reality. First off, you can only do so if you own a copy of Breath of the Wild on the Wii U and find a way to extract the ROM to use it on your PC legally. You'll also need one of the supported VR headsets: Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Meta Quest, and Windows Mixed Reality.
The GitHub page has an incredibly detailed step-by-step guide that will help you set up everything you need to do in order to get BOTW VR up and running in no time.
As always, with all these community mods, this is entirely free to use, provided you have the necessary tools to run it. There's always the possibility of Nintendo trying to take it down even though the creator makes it incredibly clear that you need an official copy of the game and isn't trying to profit off the creation of the BOTW VR mod.
