Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has gotten plenty of positive buzz after its recent Network Test, showing that this mascot racer has lots of potential. While it’s too soon to say if it will be a better product than Mario Kart World, we wouldn’t be surprised if some fans prefer this game over Mario’s Switch 2 launch title.

One reason fans might prefer CrossWorlds is that this game is pretty unbalanced, and that’s a compliment. It looks like SEGA is embracing the chaos, especially since fans are reacting with funny memes and social media posts. Fans hoping for a “fair” kart racer will be disappointed in this game, but everyone else should be pleased.

Racing Chaotix

Anyone who was able to take part in the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds network test really enjoyed how overpowered some of the power-ups are. Items like the Slicer and Monster Truck have proven to be hell for players, which some would argue adds more to the fun. Obviously, it’s not as fun being at the other end of these items, but that’s a whole other argument.

Interestingly enough, CrossWorlds’ items aren’t the only things making this game chaotic. The whole “CrossWorlds” aspect is actually making the game harder as well, since players will start recognizing a track’s patterns before they’re transported to a different course. Based on the fan reactions on social media, this is enough for many players who were ahead to lose the match.

Where are the Shields?

Despite the fun that can be had with these shenanigans in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, many have pointed out how there aren’t enough defensive items. Players can try making defensive builds for themselves via the RPG-like gadget system, but there are still too many offensive items. Once again, this is great for chaotic fun and multiplayer, although solo players going through ranked might have a miserable time.

Nintendo fans will know this mixed sense of fun and outright misery, as Mario Kart Wii was pretty infamous for having horrible balance. Players could get blue eggshells and bullet bills really quickly, which turned each regular race into a warzone. That seems to be what CrossWorlds is going for, and that might not appeal to all players.

Even with all of that, it looks like Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds could end up being a really special kart racer for fans of the blue hedgehog. SEGA’s even going to make real physical versions of the game for Switch 2, acknowledging the fan hype for this crazy racing title. At the end of the day, we all just want to have fun, and this racer seems to be embracing that.
