Rocket League 4v4 Is the Future of the Esport

Rocket League's physics engine redefines the sports game genre like only space cars can. Eliminating action animations from inputs, players are left to their own devices to pass, center, and shoot the ball, strictly by controlling the car's velocity and angle.

This added difficulty makes Rocket League esports one of the most satisfying showings of coordination, skill, and focus. The Rocket League Championship Series, Psyonix’s official yearly tournament, has run on a 3v3 format since its inception in 2015, and for good reason.

Fundamentals have always assigned one defender back at all times, and with car and pitch sizes remaining consistent after a decade, three is the perfect team size for high-action offense and show-stopping defense.

But what if there were a fourth member on each side of the field? What if the game and league accounted for two extra Rocketeers? Despite the unpopular Chaos game mode, 4v4 Rocket League was revamped in late 2025 with many quality-of-life tweaks that truly made followers question if this would be the future of the league.

First, it would mean an extra salary for major orgs, plus travel expenses for LAN appearances, which would need to be compensated by a 25% prize pool increase to make it worth their while. As far as gameplay goes, however, it gets really tricky really fast with eight players on the field, even if the pitch size is tweaked. Wall creases, ceiling height, and net area would all need to be enhanced to facilitate rotations and avoid constant friendly-fire bumps.

Once the pitch is big enough for comfortable 4v4 rotations, comms would be next to be tweaked to fit the extra players. This would essentially split all teams into two rotating halves, offense and defense, as you’re listening and coordinating with a second user instead of trying to play off three others, minimizing confusion and chaos in communication.

Bigger playing fields with an extra player should guarantee more control, so in 4v4 Rocket League, it feels natural to start every game with sole possession instead of the Basketball tip-off we currently see. Boost levels, demo respawn time, and respawn locations should all be personalized to take longer to empty, longer to spawn, and easier to rotate, respectively. It would also be the perfect time to experiment with weather physics, as more players mean more defense and more room for error when testing the feature.

After taking care of maps, gameplay, and logistics, the last thing to make the leap into 4v4 RLCS would be signing or unofficially integrating the fourth member. This would naturally dissolve many orgless teams, split lopsided trios, and create super teams that can only be stopped by another super team.

This would also open the door for substitute possibilities, an irrelevant position in today’s esports due to its fast pace and small roster sizes. Increasing the number of players due to a larger playing pitch gives teams more opportunities to try new talent and discover innovative metas, and to sub players based on the team’s approach for specific series.

In turn, Rocket League coaching would become more about strategy and less about mental, as the position currently leaves leaders awkwardly waiting on the sideline without much to contribute to the self-adjusting line-up. Overall, an increase in earnings, skill, and intensity could help the current state of the esport and the playerbase, which has been losing Supersonic speed since its pandemic peak.

If Rocket League 2 rumors are to be taken seriously, the departure from 3v3 and Standard map sizes will mark the beginning of a bolder era, one that’s not afraid to raise the bar and lean into its uniqueness, both things Epic Games has massively failed at. It would return soccar enthusiasts to the grind, a passion stripped away after over 10 years of unadulterated gameplay that must finally come to an end to evolve the esport and the game.
