PlayerUnknown, creators of the hit battle-royale game PUBG, are already making their next big game: A roguelike survival that might be the next big thing for the genre.

The map is procedurally generated.

PlayerUnknown Productions' next game is titled “Prologue: Go Wayback!,” this open-world single-player game doesn’t follow the rules of what an open-world game should be. Rather, it has a procedurally generated 64km2 game world that’s generated by your PC every time you start the game. One could say that it shares a ‘roguelike’ feel.

Every run starts players somewhere. You could be starting off at a massive rainforest or a snowy tundra, but your main goal remains the same: head toward the distant Weather Tower before your body succumbs. Maintaining your body heat, hydration and hunger are essential to survive.

It’s a game that leaves everything to the player. Meaning there are no markers to help you on your journey, and certainly no yellow paint. Prologue: Go Wayback!’s focus is simply to trust the player’s instincts on where to go. They can grab their compass or a map, sometimes relying on landmarks and familiar objects found on a beaten path.

Searching for shelters or waiting for a snowstorm to subside are some of the choices you are going to make as this game has no definite story mode. It’s just YOU and the elements.

How inventory works.

PlayerUnknown’s Prologue: Go Wayback! is coming to Steam’s Early Access this November 20. It includes the game’s default objective of simply surviving and heading to the tower.

The Early Access will also include a free-roaming mode where players can do a little bit of sightseeing and exploration without worrying about detrimental effects like dehydration and starvation. Of course, every free-roam mode will also be procedurally generated, so it may or may not be considered training.

Players who want to take exploration even further can go with the Custom Game mode. This allows you to tweak your run however you like, including weather types, spawn rates, and time of day. A map editor will also be available during the Early Access launch.

Objective: Survive.

Prologue: Go Wayback! is for players who love the survival genre, namely those who come from games like SCUM, ARK: Survival Evolved, and Minecraft. This is the kind of game that doesn’t have any definitive ending, so there’s always something more to do after a run ends, successful or not.

The big difference between Prologue: Go Wayback! compared to other survival games is that it’s a single-player game. Don’t expect to play with other friends for now, as the Early Access period will be just you and your survival skills.

The good news is that this is just PlayerUnknown’s first of their three planned titles for an ambitious project known as Artemis. Prologue: Go Wayback! is already their first foray into the studios’ dream game for a massive, living, multi-player sandbox.
