If you were yearning for a Patapon successor, you’ll be pleased to hear that Ratatan will be entering early access on Steam this September 19. The team behind it, TVT, is comprised of former Sony Japan developers who were behind the aforementioned Patapon and LocoRoco, including original Patapon creator Hiroyuki Kotani.
The game is an incredibly colorful and charming rhythm action game with roguelike elements. You’ll explore an abandoned theme park while tackling a wide variety of bosses, creating unique builds with different power-ups, craftable weapons, and, of course, different characters.
Ratatan ran an incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign back in 2023, raising almost $1.5 million. If you haven’t seen it in action, I highly recommend you check out the reveal trailer, which first caught my eye in 2024:
Originally intended for release in 2025, Ratatan will now be launching at some point during Spring 2026, as the developers shared their content roadmap for the early access period, which consists of three major updates. Each will be adding a ton of content to the game, including new enemies, weapon rarity levels, UI/UX improvements, and much more.
If you’re keen on trying the game out, Ratatan’s Steam early access will kick off on September 19 at 8 AM PT/11 AM EST/4 PM BST. It will retail for $24.99 and will include a 10% for the first 10 days of early access. Do keep in mind studios sometimes up the price for the official 1.0 release, mostly based on how much content was added; whether this is something TVT intends to do remains to be seen.
Ratatan will also release on consoles with “compatibility” coming in Spring, according to the roadmap. Hopefully, for those checking out the early access period, this means some sort of cross-save functionality is planned.
