Nioh 3 "A Cause Too Great" Main Quest Walkthrough
This guide aims to guide you through the "A Cause Too Great" quest in Nioh 3. We have broken the quest into smaller parts to help you plan your next moves. Let's begin.
Part 1: Go to the Palace Grounds

- You'll find the Palace Grounds at the centre of Heian in Nioh 3. All you need to do is spot the Giant Crucible that's right in the middle of the Heian map.
- Up next, click on the Shrine near the Hachijo map's red barrier, and fast travel there. Right when you reach the Shrine, you'll see the red barrier disappear to reveal the Crucible's entrance. Here is where your quest begins to bring peace back to Heian.
- The first thing you notice after entering the Crucible is the blazing Spirit Tree, burning to smithereens. This is the sign that you must hurry down the snowy hills to your right. Going straight leads you towards the first bodhisattva statue at the mouth of a gigantic ice cave.
- Here, activate the Shrine, and head left to find loads of floating ice Yokai hovering around the cave. Make sure you have an Uncanny Flame equipped to defeat them.
- As you keep moving to the left, you'll find a winged female Yokai. After you defeat her, head to the path on the right to find a wooden ramp. This ramp leads to the upper platform. Once you go up, you'll come across a swarm on the left. Look for the Crucible Wraith guard on the right-side path, defeat it to find a Cyclops that throws boulders.
- Stealth from around the Cyclops by taking cover behind the ice barricades. Lastly, utilise the Spirit Vein you unlocked at the top of the hill to reach the 2nd bodhisattva statue quickly.
Part 2: Complete the Second Bodhisattva Statue

- Once you reach the 2nd bodhisattva statue, find a ramp on the left to head up and go around to a large, glowing red iceberg. Break it down to open up a pathway below. From here, drop down and swim through this newly discovered pathway.
- Here, you'll find a Yokai at the frozen lake. Defeat it and head up through a stone platform towards the left. At the very top, you'll find yet another Cyclops guarding yet another iceberg. Defeat the Cyclops, destroy the iceberg and go back down to the water and traverse towards the opening at the end of the pond.
- Once you reach the rocky steps, jump over them to find a ruined house. Carefully creep around it from the left, defeating a Yokai on the way, and reach the back. At the back of the house, you'll find another Yokai guarding another iceberg. After clearing the Yokai and the ice, head down the path and go left to find the 3rd bodhisattva statue.
Part 3: Complete the Third Bodhisattva Statue

- Once you find a ramp on your left, go up and follow the path around a building. It houses an ominous and dreary black cloud inside it. Up next, approach the cloud to activate the Yokai manifestation, defeat it, and get to the chest it was previously guarding.
- Once you collect all the treasure chest items, head back out and continue on the path to your left.
- As you go further, defeat a Cyclops that's guarding the path to the right. At the centre of this area, you'll find a platform with a magical seal made by a token Yokai.
- Approach this area, and you'll notice this Token Yokai hiding under the waters below. Defeat it, destroy the magical seal iceberg, and keep walking up the bridge on the right.
- As you travel further, you'll come across your very last bodhisattva statue, as well as a Spirit Vein that leads you to Minamoto no Yoritomo, the final boss of the "A Cause Too Great" mission.
Part 4: Defeat the Formidable Minamoto no Yoritomo

Minamoto no Yoritomo in Nioh 3 weilds a long Crucible sword and deals wind damage on top of his powerful physical damage. The following are some of his most hard-hitting skills and moves, and tips on how to face them:
Wind Slice
Yoritomo slices the air with his long sword, creating up to two spinning wind blades that hurl towards you. Dodge to the sides to avoid them. Remember that his sword glows green before slicing the wind, and make your moves accordingly.
Melee Combo
Yoritomo performs a melee combo of two to four sweeps and stabs using his long sword. The speed between each slash increases after every hit, making the fourth hit right after his third attack.
Ground Rupture
Yoritomo first lifts his sword high above his head before slamming it down on the ground. It creates an enormous rupture that ripples through the ground, creating crevices in its wake.
One way to dodge is to move to the side and then go forward enough to reach him and attack before he makes his next move.
Charge Attack
Yoritomo takes his long sword to his side and dashes towards you for a heavy charge attack. Now, this could be hard to avoid, given how quickly he charges.
Thankfully, the way out is to keep an eye on his wind-up and move away when it looks like he'll charge next.
Grab Attack
Yoritomo first launches himself up in the sky, and stays there for a second. His next move is to fly towards you at blink speed, so dodge the moment you see him jump up.
One way to know that a Grab Attack is coming your way is to check if his weapon is sparkling. If it twinkles, a Grab Attack is on its way.
Flying Wind Slice
The Flying Wind Slice is just another version of the Wild Slice. The difference is, he leaps up in the air and dishes out the wind blades. Now, there are around six wind blades that come your way, with very little time in between. So, dodge sideways to keep yourself from harm's way.
Whirlwind Strike
During this move, Yoritomo becomes much more powerful than before. He spins rapidly twice or thrice and creates a whirlwind to strike you down. While the Whirldwind Strike deals physcial damage outside the Yokai Realm, within it, this move dishes out a lethal elemental damage.
And the best way out of it is to dodge strategically and move out of his way.
The best way to take down Minamoto no Yoritomo in Nioh 3 is to memorise his attack patterns and dodge skillfully. And since he is weak to water and fire damage, make sure to channel a fire-based spirit before moving into his arena.
You can also imbue your weapons and items with fire and water for additional damage output. And if you have your Uncanny Fire Ninjutsu and the Uncanny Bubble, you're all set.
In short, the "A Cause Too Great" quest in Nioh 3 requires time, effort, and a whole lot of strategies. So, if you're gearing up for this main quest, make sure to equip the required gear and take the right paths to bring back peace and harmony in Heian.
