Nintendo could finally be adding achievements to its software. A patent published this past September 4 (via GONintendo) details potential achievement functionality, similar to that seen on Xbox or PlayStation trophies.
Achievements are something that Nintendo fans have been clamoring for years. For some, they’re a neat way to track progress, especially if you’re trying to go for a completionist run. The patent was then followed by a big leak that essentially confirmed achievements are coming to Nintendo Switch.
What’s interesting about the way Nintendo is doing this is that they’ll be tying achievements to digital rewards. Some will grant you cosmetics like profile icons or wallpapers, presumably for use on your PC or phone, since the Switch UI doesn’t allow any sort of customization.
The leak also mentions you’ll be able to see and compare achievements with friends, to see which ones you’ve both gotten and who’s accrued the most. Again, nothing we haven’t seen on other platforms, but it was about time Nintendo got into the game.
Sadly, as this is Nintendo we’re talking about, achievements will come with a caveat: you’ll be required to have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. That is, to reiterate, according to leaks. Nintendo has not made any official statement as of the time of writing.
Players could already redeem rewards for select games via the Missions and Rewards program of the Switch Online service, so achievements seem to be an expanded version of this format. In their current form, you simply have to play the highlighted games to earn currency for rewards.
Hopefully, the achievement system will be made available to all users, regardless of their subscription. Otherwise, fans might not react well to their inclusion.
