Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection’s Follow-up Should Focus on the 3D Games

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection looks like another promising fighting game compilation, collecting most of the franchise’s 2D titles. The fact that we’re getting entries from the 32X and Game Boy Advance is impressive, as is having the console release of MK Trilogy. Having most of the 2D games in one place is great, and we hope something similar is done for the 3D games.

Since MK is still a huge franchise for Warner Bros. Games, with the second MK movie coming out later this year, a second Kollection comprising the 3D games seems likely. We’ll have to wait and see if the sales of this compilation will leave room for a second one, but fans of the series would appreciate it. It wouldn’t just be great for this franchise but for game preservation as a whole.

Celebrating the Beginning of the End

The 3D Mortal Kombat games released during the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube eras are truly interesting within this ongoing franchise. It’s the first time the now-defunct Midway experimented with true 3D fighting, and some of these entries still have features not seen in more recent titles. You don’t see weapon-swapping and a full third-person adventure mode in Mortal Kombat 1.

Admittedly, these 3D games never reached the same heights as competitors of the time, with SoulCalibur and Tekken preferred over these titles. Still, fans would pay top dollar to get Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon in one 3D collection. It would also be amazing if they included the Shaolin Monks spinoff titles, as fans have wanted that adventure ported for many years now.

More importantly, for fans of the lore, these Mortal Kombat games show how all of the time travel and multiverse shenanigans came to be. While these storytelling tropes aren’t in the game per se, they do explain why Raiden went crazy with this concept in the first place.

The Road to MK9 Getting a Re-Release?

One other major reason to re-release the 3D games after Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection is so that we see more of these compilations and re-releases. We imagine that the potential success of Legacy Kollection will allow for more entries and give fans a history lesson for this beloved franchise. Even if they don’t play all of the games, some fans will just appreciate the BTS material that should be added.

What matters is that these compilations and re-releases could lead to the return of MK9 to modern systems. Considering how this entry introduced the series’ cinematic story modes, it’s almost a crime that it isn’t readily available. This is because there are copyright complications with Freddy Kreuger, since he was a DLC fighter, but it’s a shame this led to the whole game being removed.

Having the 3D games released before would be beneficial, since that would show fans how much things have changed. It would also be nice to have Mortal Kombat: Armageddon in a modern system, since that’s one of the most comprehensive entries in the series. Playing that game, which is the old franchise’s proper finale, before MK9 reboots it all would be fascinating and a really informative binge-gaming session.
