Naughty Dog may have long-abandoned the idea of a multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part II, but these modders prove that it was possible all along. And the crazy thing? They’re all doing this in their spare time.
Modder Speclizer has been dabbling on The Last of Us Part 2’s PC version since its release in April 2025. Earlier this week, though, they seemed to have broken new ground by creating the first-ever multiplayer mod for Part II on PC, but it’s still janky and unfinished.

The modder’s minute-long video showcased Ellie and Dina’s first chapters in Seattle, but instead of an AI-controlled Dina, another player controls her. Both can be seen exploring the semi-open world, but the limitations of the mod are also clear, including a lack of dialogue interactions. Some fans are even worried that certain puzzles might be affected by this mod, but that does not appear to be the modder’s intention when they created it.
Speclizer mentioned that the intent of this mod is for a purely PvP experience. Those expecting to see an ARC Raiders-like approach with a mix of PvE and PvP will sorely be disappointed, as involving other NPCs makes things a lot harder. If players want to play a PvE experience, The Last of Us: No Return is available.
Players were excited to hear this news, as The Last of Us fans have been hungry for decent multiplayer content that can rival the first game’s Factions mode. It was a beloved multiplayer game mode for the original The Last of Us, adding a fun and casual romp where players can enjoy modes like team deathmatches.

The Remastered re-release of The Last of Us also includes Factions, featuring improved controls and various quality-of-life updates. To this day, many players are still actively playing it.
Factions was clearly a fan-favourite. This is why many fans were disappointed when Naughty Dog and Sony cancelled a standalone multiplayer game set in the Last of Us universe. And now that this mod has been created, it suggests that a Factions-style mode in The Last of Us Part II might be possible, although it would likely take a lot of work.
Fans are also worried that this mod will eventually be taken down, as Naughty Dog and Sony are always persistent when it comes to protecting their IP. Now that this multiplayer mod has reached mainstream audiences, the possibility is that it will be removed by the time you are reading this. Hopefully that’s not the case.
The mod isn’t available to play yet, but Speclizer has a variety of other The Last of Us Part II mods on their Patreon page if you’re interested.
