Marvel Rivals is facing a new wave of concerns after players have spotted what looks to be AI art in the game’s new Star Lord costume.

Last week’s store refresh added three new skins for everyone’s favorite Marvel Rivals heroes. Daredevil got a sweater, Peni Parker built a massive robot snow sculpture, and Star Lord turned into a nutcracker. While some of the skins didn’t have any noticeable backgrounds, only Star Lord’s ‘Starcracker Skin’ has one, and players quickly notice that it looks suspicious.

The background art for Star Lord’s ‘Starcracker Skin’ is presumably made by AI. Marvel Rivals players all over Reddit started looking for glaring AI inconsistencies in the background art. Some notice that the Christmas Tree’s streamers don’t make sense as they overlap each other, with some switching to different colors from red to pink.

Is that generative AI art in the background?

Reddit users even found more obvious inconsistencies, as one of the Christmas Tree’s ornaments has bizarre patterns that barely resemble a snowflake. A regular artist would have put more thought into creating these tiny ice crystals, but in the alleged AI art, it’s completely botched, like a smidge of white paint was just sprayed all over it. There’s also a toy car tucked away in the background that exhibits odd AI design, with zero doors and unrealistic proportions.

This has baffled the Marvel Rivals community. Some players are chiming in to decipher its AI origins, with some arguing that it is simply drawn very loosely and uses photobashed textures, which causes strange artifacts. Others believe that NetEase is reusing the same art from elsewhere and scaling it, which makes the full image look awkward. Perhaps the most realistic explanation is that this is a rushed design from an artist.

If this is generative AI art, how much more might NetEase be using for some of their pricier costumes? Some players even notice that the background in Peni Parker’s Christmas Skin could be using generative AI due to its bizarre style.

Marvel Rivals’ Christmas Bundle is available now, and players can purchase Star Lord’s ‘Starcracker Skin’ for 2,300 Units. As his first Legendary Skin, Star Lord’s ultimate voicelines change from “Legendary!” to “Happy Holidays!”

Whether this design was created with AI or not, players are beginning to worry that it could set a slippery slope for the game’s future content. There could be an influx of generative AI content in cosmetics, including sprays, emojis, and premium skins. Unless NetEase addresses the issue directly, it remains purely speculation.
