The need for Capcom to bring back a new Devil May Cry game is becoming more and more inevitable. After Capcom shared its latest data for the fiscal year 2026, Devil May Cry 5 has sold over 11 million units worldwide, proving the series still has a dedicated audience nearly six years after its release.
The series has long cultivated a passionate community of character-action fans who revel in the adrenaline and never-ending combos. Devil May Cry 5, being Capcom’s most recent entry, pushed the limits of what the genre can do with multiple playable characters, each with their own unique archetypes in the action gameplay.

After Vergil’s launch in Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, the series hasn’t been around apart from the Netflix anime, and my impatience has made me excited for its imminent return.
Capcom has officially confirmed that more of their beloved IPs are being developed, including Remakes and ports, but I know in the back of my mind that they’re already building something for the next Devil May Cry entry.
Why Dante and Vergil Are Key for Devil May Cry 6

To start, one of my most anticipated things to see in the inevitable sequel is the return of Vergil and Dante. Spoiler Alert: after their final battle at the end of Devil May Cry 5, the Sons of Sparda are once again trapped in hell, bickering and dueling for god knows how long. Capcom already has an angle to focus on the next game with both Vergil and Dante as playable characters.
The Sons of Sparda, while still reeling from their lack of parental care, remain the series icons. It would be criminal for Capcom to simply throw them into the ditch and let the other protagonist, Nero, come to save the day again. (We will talk about Nero later.)
Vergil and Dante in hell is also a perfect place for the duo to settle out their differences for good and escape from its pantheon of demons. Villains like Mundus and possibly Arkham could still be alive and haunting the blood brothers once again. But bringing old villains would be cheap, and that’s not Capcom’s cup of tea. They could either serve as special cameos that block the brothers in their path or continue on to their merry adventures.
Devil May Cry 6: Could a Two-Protagonist Setup Work?

Combat-wise, it’s hard to pull off a Devil May Cry game without its flashy and free-flowing combat. Capcom has already mastered the multiple protagonist setup with 5, but the iffiness with V’s control schemes and his summons were among the game’s few drawbacks. The next Devil May Cry game should focus on two characters instead of three.
But before you rally those pitchforks: as for the robot-arm-wielding hero, Nero really needs his time off, like seriously. He has a full life ahead of him with Kyrie waiting back home, and it would be a disservice to his character to bring him back into the frontlines again. A brief cameo or a “Special Edition” could always bring him back, but putting him into the main story could risk overshadowing Vergil and Dante’s journey.
Who Could Direct Devil May Cry 6 After Hideaki Itsuno?

Hideaki Itsuno, famed director of Devil May Cry 5 and Devil May Cry 4, left the company back in 2024. This leaves a massive hole in Devil May Cry’s future. A new director has big shoes to fill, considering the grand legacy Itsuno left to the series.
This could potentially be the first hurdle of the future Devil May Cry game, but Capcom has no shortage of talent in its pipeline. There are multiple candidates that fans (and probably Capcom) have eyed for its next successor, with the noteworthy one being the design lead for Vergil in Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, Junya Kumabe.
The potential Devil May Cry 6 director could expand on the game’s traditional character-action, possibly expanding both Vergil and Dante’s arsenal of demonic arms. Fans also wanted to see more co-op action, which was introduced in Devil May Cry 5. Imagine a co-op Bloody Palace, that would be interesting.
Ultimately, everything I’ve shared is speculation; a fan’s hope for what the next Devil May Cry game might bring. As long as the series keeps its dynamic combat, aura-farming characters, and signature rock soundtrack, fans will be eagerly waiting for Capcom’s next thrilling chapter.
