  • Key Update: Capcom has designed Requiem to support both perspectives, seemingly tailored to its dual protagonists. Recent gameplay showcases suggest a "hybrid" approach.

  • Quick Answer: While you can likely toggle between both, the developers recommend Third-Person for Leon (action) and First-Person for Grace (survival horror).

Resident Evil: Requiem is finally here, with excitement ramping up for the future of the franchise, both in terms of story and the gameplay innovations it might bring, including the ability to play in first and third-person POVs.

Both POVs have been part of the franchise before, with the classic way of experiencing the games usually being from a third-person perspective. However, the most recent mainline entries, Resident Evil 7 and Village, switched to primarily a first-person POV, with updates to RE8 allowing players to enjoy the game in third-person.

In terms of story, as much as fans enjoyed the journey of Ethan Winters and his family, seeing friendly faces like an aged-up Leon Kennedy feels exciting. There's also the fact that RE Requiem seems to be going back to the franchise's roots, as we could be looking to uncover a lingering mystery surrounding a desolated Raccoon City.

Should You Play RE Requiem In First or Third-Person?

Capcom recommends you play the Grace sections in first-person, reserving the third-person POV to Leon Kennedy's action-packed sequences. There is a small notification at the start of the game.

That shouldn't come as a surprise as during a Resident Evil showcase before the game's release, Capcom delved deeper into the differences between Leon and Grace's gameplay. While Leon is much more action-focused, giving players the power fantasy of turning into a badass in a zombie apocalypse, Grace is more akin to a survival horror experience, with limited combat experience, and even needing ink ribbons to save your progress. As such, Capcom showed all Leon footage using the third-person POV view, while Grace's segments were all recorded in first-person.

As you'd expect, seeing Leon from a third-person perspective is more seamless, as there are plenty of contextual action animations that might not work in first-person or look a little jaded. Contrary to Grace, whose gameplay looks much less exhilarating and kinetic. With her, it seems to be all about the atmosphere and resource management to add stress for the player, so the first-person mode seems to work best.

So there you have it, Capcom might want you to mix the perspectives a little. At the end of the day, however, it's entirely your call.
