I'm Still Waiting for a Turn-Based Final Fantasy VII Remake with Ever Crisis Assets

Ever Crisis with the whole party from FF7

The Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy is almost done, and it’s fair to say that fans have mixed opinions about this move. While I'm personally a big fan of the real-time combat and overall story, others have been more critical about these changes. Not everyone appreciates the self-aware narrative, especially when there are cloaked ghosts who are making sure events go according to plan.

It’s why I was relieved when the Ever Crisis mobile game was announced, because it looked like an interesting alternative to the Remake trilogy. During exploration, players control chibi versions of the characters, while the turn-based battles update them to their Remake versions (or whatever costumes players paid for, it’s still a gacha game).

Ever Crisis, a mobile game dedicated to retelling the original FF7, Crisis Core, and Sephiroth's backstory, has been going on for a few years now. I’m interested in seeing what this game will be like when the final entry of Square’s Remake trilogy finally comes out. Personally, I just want Square Enix to make another Final Fantasy VII Remake with Ever Crisis assets, so fans can finally have the updated turn-based classic they’ve been asking for.

Blame Octopath Traveller 0

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve wanted a “proper” remake of Final Fantasy VII with the Ever Crisis assets ever since I saw Square Enix unveil this mobile game. As someone who doesn’t care for mobile games, seeing this unique FF7 experience made me sad, because there was no way I was going to play it. While Ever Crisis did come to Steam, that hasn’t swayed me in the slightest, especially when Square’s superior games are also available on the platform.

A part of me felt that Square would just let Ever Crisis die, and fans would never see these assets again. Square has done similarly with their mobile games based on Star Ocean and the Mana titles, so I assumed the same thing would happen here. While Ever Crisis is still alive, Square’s track record with mobile games shows it will die any minute now.

However, hope for these mobile games getting repackaged surfaced when Square announced Octopath Traveller 0. Actually seeing Square take their mobile game and fashion it into a better single-player experience blew my mind, because the company had never done it before. It also helps that the Octopath Traveller games are great in their own right and popularized the HD-2D style we see in other Square Enix remakes.

I’m not even lying, that announcement immediately made me think Square Enix can do the same with Ever Crisis. Just imagine a faithful turn-based remake of Final Fantasy VII with those detailed chibi models from the mobile game. Maybe it won’t come true, but Octopath Traveller 0 is giving me hope.

Turn-based Supremacy?

Now that turn-based games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 have shown devs that this is still a battle system fans want, Square Enix could easily gain favor by just announcing Final Fantasy VII Pocket Remake or something to that degree. Using the Ever Crisis graphics and assets for something that could have a lasting impact with fans would be incredible, especially because turn-based battles are so back.

It’s not even just Expedition 33, as fans still love the turn-based battles from the original Final Fantasy VII. The ATB (Active Time Battle) system is still a ton of fun to take part in, as players need to pick their moves quickly or risk getting hit by their opponents. Simple, yet effective, there’s a reason why it's most fans' favorite battle system in the series.

Ever Crisis

As someone who loves the current direction of Square’s Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, I really do hope the company does something to quell complaints from turn-based fans. While the original game is available for modern systems, complete with some QOL features to speed things up, some fans just can’t get used to those blocky PS1 character models. Remaking the game with Ever Crisis’ adorable and detailed visuals would get more fans to try it out, especially if the ATB system returns.

Will fans actually get a turn-based Final Fantasy VII Remake? Only time will tell. This could be a project that Square Enix winds up making after they’ve concluded their current Remake trilogy on modern systems.

In the meantime, I do think fans should give the original Final Fantasy VII a shot, even with those PS1 visuals. The QOL features make grinding a lot faster and more bearable, while its original story has stood the test of time. Why do you think Square Enix is dedicating a current-gen trilogy and a mobile game to this story?
