How To Defeat The Nightmare in Black Ops 7

Black Ops 7

Black Ops 7

Found in the third campaign mission, Distortion, The Nightmare fight pushes the intensity to its peak in Black Ops 7.

It’s where Frank Woods becomes trapped inside a monstrous flower-like entity, forcing the Joint Special Operations Command to battle a living hallucination.

Enemy waves, shifting terrain, and phase-based weak spots make this a battle where teamwork and patience decide who survives.

How Should You Prepare for the Fight?

Before the fight begins, you’ll re-enter the barge after clearing away the vines blocking your path.

Make sure to stock up on ammo and tactical gear, because once you open the container holding Woods, the environment will twist into a warped nightmare.

Every trace of human enemies disappears, replaced with grotesque creatures and spectral fragments of Woods himself.

These haunting figures reveal fragments of his pain while pointing the way through the twisted environment to the final encounter.

Once you reach the source of the vines, the actual boss encounter begins.

With the Grapple Hook in hand, dodging The Nightmare’s brutal sweeps and climbing to better vantage points becomes effortless.

During co-op play, assign someone to collect the Crash Cart ability from the red-highlighted crates on the higher platforms for remote revives and group healing.

What Happens in Phase 1?

The battle opens with The Nightmare towering over the arena, but its yellow weak spots remain hidden until later.

Wait for them to sprout and then shoot them as soon as they light up. Destroying these growths exposes the creature’s heads, which can then be damaged to chip away at its health bar.

Keep moving and use the Grapple Hook to get to higher ground when it launches its red-vomit area-of-effect attack, which can knock you down or kill you outright if you stay in the open.

After enough damage, The Nightmare becomes stunned, but instead of going down, it will spawn a wave of infected enemies.

Wipe out all nearby enemies quickly since the boss is untouchable until then.

What Changes in Phase 2?

Once the first wave ends, The Nightmare wakes up angrier than before.

It now starts summoning floating eyeball drones that fly directly toward you and explode on contact.

Don’t hesitate when you see them because even one slip-up can get someone killed. At the same time, new growths will appear across the boss’s body.

These growths deal major damage when destroyed, so focus fire on them to chip away large chunks of their health.

During this phase, expect enemy spawns to ramp up. If your squad gets overwhelmed, the player holding the Crash Cart ability should prioritize reviving downed teammates from a distance.

Keeping everyone alive is critical because the fight becomes exponentially harder if you’re left solo.

How Do You Handle Phase 3?

Once the second set of growths is destroyed, the boss shifts to its final stage.

Its massive heads begin attacking aggressively, spitting acid and slamming the ground.

Each head can be destroyed individually, but the catch is that they keep fighting back even as they take damage.

You’ll need to stay alert and manage your positioning carefully. For solo players, hugging the roots and using the environment for cover is essential.

Peek out to shoot between attack cycles, especially after the vomit AoE blast.

In a full squad, have one or two players focus on damaging the heads while others clear out adds and drones.

The fight gradually becomes easier as more heads are destroyed, each one exploding once its health is depleted.
