How to Beat Cerberus in Hades 2

Hades 2

Hades 2

Cerberus might look like the same loyal guardian from the first Hades, but this time he’s not the friendly gatekeeper you could bribe with a Satyr Sack.

Corrupted by miasma and under the influence of Chronos, the three-headed hound has turned into one of the game’s most demanding bosses.

He’s enormous, wild, and quick to flood the battlefield with flames, shockwaves, and killing runes.

Beating him depends less on aggression and more on recognizing his moves, managing where you stand, and timing attacks wisely.

If you’re heading into the Mourning Fields and want to free the family pet without losing your run, here’s how to take down Infernal Cerberus step by step.

How Should You Think About the Fight Overall?

Cerberus deals most of his damage straight ahead, so staying at his sides or behind his back legs is the safest bet.

Wait out the wind-up and dash clean. Going too soon gets you hit. When you spot the move he’s preparing, slip past the hitbox, land a quick strike, then retreat to safety.

Long-range kiting sounds safer but actually makes avoiding his projectiles and eruptions harder. Staying close but controlled, and knowing when to disengage, clinches the encounter.

How Should You Position and Move?

Keep to one of his shoulders so you can dash either behind or away depending on the attack.

When a paw rises, dash through the body to the safe side and get in a short combo. If you’re caught out of angle, backdash once, re-position, and resume circling.

During eruption patterns, sprint to the nearest untouched patch and wait until the detonation finishes before re-engaging.

In phase two, he begins to track and move aggressively, so lean into hit-and-run. Punish only after he commits to a long move or finishes a slam chain.

What Happens in Phase 1?

The first half of the Cerberus fight is all about learning his tells and safely chipping away while he stays mostly in place.

His first attacks come as ground-shaking paw blows, single or double, each ready to punish dodges made too quickly.

When you see a paw lift and flash, it’s your cue to dash through his body to a safe side or retreat if you’re late.

The central double slam happens faster, so you need to time your dodge at the exact moment the paws hit the ground.

He’ll sometimes swing out a wide flaming arc with his Flaming Swipe or Wave of Flame, and if you’re close it’s safer to dodge into the arc toward him than to run away.

Each slow fireball “maw” erupts on landing. Sidestep instead of retreating directly to avoid the blast. Cerberus sometimes inhales to drag you closer and follows with a heavy slam or sets up rune blasts.

Break free by sprinting sideways. His Explosive Runes are one of the safest times to deal damage. Red circles sprout tendrils before bursting, and you can strike while they’re still forming, but step out before the blast.

He can also roar to summon yellow shades, and it’s worth clearing them fast so they don’t clutter the fight.

The entire phase is about recognizing whether he’s going for a quick paw slam or the slower flame swipe and punishing safely, especially while his runes charge.

What Changes in Phase 2?

When Cerberus hits half health, the fight speeds up as he burrows underground and summons armored Mourning Fields enemies, and clearing them fast keeps the arena from becoming overwhelming.

His reappearance is often marked by a large entrance explosion, so stand just outside the glowing marker and be ready to punish as soon as he finishes emerging.

From here, his speed picks up as he strings together a long Forward Slam Combo, striking eight times with mild tracking that punishes anyone trying to counter. The safest move is to sprint wide until the sequence ends.

His Explosive Runes now sweep across large parts of the arena in waves. Wait for the first wave to go off, then step into the cleared tiles to stay safe.

He adds a wide-arc Flamethrower or Fire Gout that ties into his rune moves. If you’re close, dash behind him to avoid the flames; if you’re mid-range, circle hard and focus on survival first.

When he starts Chasing Ground Pounds, he’ll track you and pound shockwaves. Keep running until the sequence finishes and then go back in.

Sometimes he’ll dive underground and burst up beneath you with a fast AoE. Dash away as soon as he vanishes to avoid the blast and punish his recovery.

He can trap you with a Walled Rune Ring, closing the area and often following up with a heavy slam, so be ready to dash out.

This phase is all about patience as you survive layered attacks, create space, and strike near his hind legs when it’s safe.

Which Boons and Keepsakes Help Most Here?

Move constantly and deal steady damage by grabbing a dash or sprint power like Aphrodite’s Passion Rush, Zeus or Ares rushes, or the Swift Runner Arcana.

Lingering effects such as Hestia’s Scorch, Demeter’s Freeze, and lightning keep draining his health while you move.

Use Omega Casts in phase one when he is still. Switch to faster casts and melee in phase two. Selene can deal big bursts with Lunar Ray, Dark Side, and Wolf Howl, while Moon Water helps patch you up in a pinch.

Good options include Odysseus’ Knuckle Bones to take less damage, Medea’s Blackened Fleece to power up omegas, and Arachne’s Scarf or Luckier Tooth to stay alive longer.
