Hollow Knight: Silksong isn’t just a good sequel to the original game, it’s a harder one as well. Fans were prepared for difficult boss fights and challenging platforming, but Silksong has taken those veteran players and turned them into scared children. It’s why some fans decided to make an “Easy Mode” No Double Damage mod to make the games more manageable.
So how heartbreaking must it have been when a new difficulty mode revealed that fans have been playing in “Easy Mode” all this time?
That’s right, fans have discovered an even harder difficulty is available in Silksong, and it’s going to drive players crazy. While the normal game lets you get your body back upon dying, this new Steel Soul difficulty means death is permanent, no more revives. Yup, this game now has permadeath.
At least it's optional. Here’s what we know about unlocking Steel Soul difficulty in Hollow Knight: Silksong.
How Do You Unlock Steel Soul Difficulty in Silksong
All players have to do is enter this code in the game’s Extras menu: Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right.
Players should hear a chime, and they will now be able to choose Steel Soul difficulty when starting a new game in Hollow Knight: Silksong. We advise players to complete their current run on “Easy Mode” first, because permadeath is one of the most soul-crushing things any players can experience in games. Unless you’re a hardcore masochist who loves getting kicked when their down, we advise you avoid this mode entirely.
What is Permadeath?
For anyone unfamiliar with the concept of permadeath, this mode means death is permanent. That doesn’t just mean a game-over screen; your save will be erased once you die.

As I mentioned earlier, this mode is designed for players who want to challenge themselves and maximize their experience in the game. Personally, you’re better off just completing the game in its base difficulty and trying out Steel Soul difficulty another time. At least beating the game will give you a sense of satisfaction; Steel Soul will just kill your spirit, unless you’ve at least beaten the game once.
If you’ve already beaten Hollow Knight: Silksong, Steel Soul might be a decent reason to replay this difficult Metroidvania. Why anyone would want to make a hard game harder is beyond me, but that’s just how some gamers are. At least, they get to spend more time in this beautiful world Team Cherry created.
