Arrowhead’s democracy-spreading PvE game, Helldivers 2, has incurred the wrath of thousands of its playerbase after one of the developers ignored the necessary suggestions for one of its ‘meme weapons.’
In an interview video posted by Arrowhead on their official channels, the design director of Helldivers 2, Niklas Malborg, talked at length about what to expect in the game’s future updates.
The 35-minute interview video brought up some interesting points about the game’s ongoing balance and longevity. This includes brief mentions about the game’s stealth weapons with suppressors, as well as discussing what ‘weapon penetration’ actually means.
One snippet from the interview drew flak when players found out it’s completely unfounded. When Niklas talked about his refusal to adjust “The One True Flag” Stratagem, players immediately called him out, saying the game doesn’t need any semblance of realism.
His reasoning was that buffing the stratagem and adding an AoE morale or damage boost would go against the game’s grounded approach, saying it would start to lean heavily on magic. Players are furious about his approach, claiming that the game was never realistic to begin with.
Fans have always wanted to see the OTF viable in higher difficulty missions and not just considered as a ‘meme weapon.’ There is no strategic advantage when carrying it other than thrusting it at Terminid or Automaton heads. It has a lengthy cooldown of 6 minutes, and carrying it only causes concerns among your teammates as it wastes one Stratagem slot. Worse, it’s part of a paid Warbond (DLC) that roughly costs $10.

Since its release, suggestions such as having the OTF lure enemies to the carrier’s location have been well received. Other ideas, like reducing its cooldown to just a few seconds, would also make it far more viable. What the community really wants, however, is the addition of an AoE effect that grants enhancements to anyone standing within it. Of course, Arrowhead refuses to acknowledge any suggestions, which is why we’re here now.
Helldivers 2 players have been adamant in calling out Arrowhead, arguing that buffing the only Stratagem in the Masters of Ceremony Warbond would boost its sales, making it a win-win approach.
The game is already riddled with unrealistic moments. One Reddit user even listed the number of times the game exhibits sci-fi-like hallmarks, including FTL Travel, teleportation, sentient robots, aliens, and basically everything Helldivers 2 has to offer.
The interview came off as a strange and awkward attempt to reconnect with the community, which has always been the driving force behind Helldivers’ success. As a result, fans are increasingly worried that Arrowhead is slowly moving away from Helldivers 2, leaving behind only a skeleton crew to handle balance updates and small content drops.
Helldivers players simply want the game to fully embrace its over-the-top horde shooter identity, without worrying about whether carrying a flag that emits a magical aura is “realistic.”
