GTA in Fortnite? Collabs We'll Truly Never See on the Battle Bus

  • Status: Confirmed (Licensing Hurdles)

  • Quick Answer: Industry giants like Nintendo and Rockstar Games refuse Fortnite collabs due to strict platform exclusivity demands and concerns over brand-damaging depictions of violence or corporate parody.

Honestly, after Kim Kardashian and SpongeBob SquarePants simultaneously dropped on the Item Shop, I was wholeheartedly certain there was nothing that would not crossover to Fortnite in due time.

Then, it kicked me. It isn’t about who Fortnite is willing to model and put a price tag on – it’s who’s willing to open that door to give up their licensing rights. Who in their right mind would say no to a shot at global mainstream status, a status only Epic Games can produce post-collab?

Well, I can name a few, to be honest. Some would skew away because of the nature of the game. Others would do so with a hard no, deeming the joint effort to be beneath their franchise’s current state. Regardless of the ‘no’, here are four intellectual properties I’m certain we won’t see on the Battle Bus anytime soon.

1. Nintendon’t Even Think About It

While highly anticipated, Pokemon Fornite companions will never be a thing. The Pokemon Company is quite protective of the little creatures, not even for their cuteness, but for the big buckaroos you get a hold of, no matter what they’re attached to. Same with big boy Nintendo.

Even after the Epic Games v Apple case leaked the rejected intentions to add Samus Aran, fans still wish on a dead star to see the Japanese IPs on the island. We know how particularly lawsuit-happy the Nintendo legal department gets, waggling their tails at the thought of biting a kid’s pocket, so no wonder Epic backed off from insisting or even nodding at their franchises.

While I don’t think Nintendo will budge anytime in the near, mid, or far future, sometimes it’s never say never for these types of things. Though this might be a sometime in my lifetime, not sometime in the 21st century.

2. GTA in Fortnite? Here We Go Again…

GTA in Fortnite is like drinking coffee while brushing your teeth: it sounds great until you catch a taste, and that’s beyond the players’ opinion. Though it might feel natural to consumers, it is irrational for the corporate machine.

Fortnite is the market’s answer to a violence-driven gaming landscape, literally the polar opposite of Grand Theft Auto. What Epic Games tries to cover up with censorship, family-friendly lingo, and faux-innocence, GTA would blow up in a single RPG hit.

Besides, it would benefit no one. Fort would dive right into hot water while GTA waters itself down, becoming exactly what it promised to destroy: corporate greed and consumer culture. The Americana parody turned into the ultimate parody of American media. Funny, but unrealistic.

3. Shoe Don’t Fit: Epic Kingdom Without Princesses

Back in February 2024, The Walt Disney Company announced its $1.5 billion investment in Fortnite’s daddy, Epic Games, to acquire a minority equity stake. This would enable a two-way street of ongoing collaboration, such as Marvel tie-ins, Pixar revivals, and Star Wars drops.

However, some of the mouse’s most important guests are yet to be seen boarding the Battle Bus, and I honestly do not ever see them coming near the bus stop at all. Disney Princesses are nowhere in sight when it comes to this colossal Disney effort in Fortnite. The closest thing we’ve gotten was a sponsored Moana-themed island code without, you guessed it, Moana.

Any non-action characters would also be locked on the tallest tower of Fortnite’s island – to noone’s surprise. It’s just weird considering how some of their biggest icons are hidden after paying up such a large sum. Only heroes welcome? Somebody call Mulan, stat.

4. Kim Kardashian ≠ Kanye West

Listen, I know the new meta is evergreen collaborations, and everyone should be welcome from a content-first perspective – I just do not see Mr. West ever making the jump. In another lose-lose situation, Ye is on a PR-healing tour Epic Games wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pickaxe, and “anti-Fortnite” sounds exactly like the type of tweet runs Kanye has been on as of late.

Despite many interpreting Kim K’s debut in Fortnite as the definitive answer for Kanye’s conundrum, I just don’t see Epic Games risking the collaboration just to be handed a dumbed-down feature and a PR ticking time bomb. Time will tell, though. These collaborations just don’t fall out of the sky, you know? (Sky, you know?)
