From Town Building to Team Building: Unlocking the RPG Potential of Animal Crossing

Animal Crossing Knight

When it comes to Animal Crossing, it is renowned for providing great social simulation games. While they're not the most exciting, a lot of enjoyment can still be had from the everyday tasks people can do in them, such as beautifying one's living space with the many available decorations and making friends with the numerous charming anthropomorphic NPCs.

But given that it seems to have done nearly all it can with the gameplay of that particular genre, perhaps it may be time for the next Animal Crossing to go in directions it has never gone before. Among all the ways it could go, I believe that the best route would be that of an RPG.

It would make sense for a mainline entry to tackle the genre, as the franchise already has the necessary resources to do so in the best way possible. As for what those are, to start, it's the numerous characters that have been established throughout Animal Crossing's lifespan.

With every game released, the franchise has managed to produce nearly 500 distinct anthropomorphic NPCs, each with unique features that enable players to distinguish them from one another. Because of that, an Animal Crossing RPG could easily have a diverse roster, one that both longtime fans and newcomers can appreciate.

Another resource would be the many different types of decor. When it comes to Animal Crossing, just about any item you can think of is in the games, from the mundane to the utterly bizarre. For every normal piece like a standard couch, there's something you'd never expect to see, like a decorative Lighthouse or a spaceship control panel.

Due to the diversity in decor, an Animal Crossing RPG could potentially have numerous settings. This means a wide variety of places to explore, and all of them will look aesthetically pleasing due to the pieces that can be used from previous games, allowing for a grand and beautiful adventure.

For the last item, if there's one thing from the previous games that emphasizes why the franchise should tackle the RPG genre, it's the variety of outfits. Anyone who has played an Animal Crossing title will know that one of the main selling points is the amount of different clothes and combinations that can be worn.

Because of the seemingly limitless number of options, it would allow for an RPG with one of the largest lists of equipment. Also, it could result in the most stylish, since players can pick and choose any article of clothing to be altered, thanks to New Horizons. Due to the numerous options, it can keep players invested, as they'll want to see and possibly even collect them all.

With all that said, it's clear that Animal Crossing has a lot of potential if it were ever to go down the RPG route. Nintendo could eventually make it happen, and I hope that it does, as not only would it be good for current fans, but it could open doors to broaden its audience, making the franchise even more popular and successful in the process.
