  • CD Projekt Red issues takedown on the popular Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod after the creator was found to make profit out of it in his Patreon.

Did you know a Cyberpunk 2077 VR Mod exists? If not, then you’re probably too late, as CD Projekt Red has officially taken down these mods via DMCA.

CD Projekt Red’s VP of Business Development, Jan Rosner, issued a statement on social media regarding the DMCA takedown. The mod was removed because it was paid content sold by LukeRoss to his Patreon subscribers. This violates CDPR’s Fan Content Guidelines, which prohibit monetizing the company’s IP without direct permission.

Jan Rosner also made it clear that while CD Projekt Red celebrates the creation of user-generated mods, LukeRoss’ mod was a blatant violation that reportedly cost CD Projekt Red $20,000 USD per month. Fans were quick enough to acknowledge how fair the takedown was.

Prior to the takedown, creator LukeRoss posted on his Patreon regarding the CD Projekt Red DMCA issue, criticizing CD Projekt Red and stating that the company “doesn’t give a f**k about how playing their game in VR made people happy.” Some users even commented that the takedown wouldn’t even have happened if he hadn’t paywalled it through his Patreon account.

Creator LukeRoss or R.E.A.L. VR mods is a well-known modder responsible for bringing VR support to games that don’t natively support it. Titles like Ubisoft’s Far Cry series and Hogwarts Legacy are some of his more popular works. He essentially transformed these games into an immersive experience by making them playable on an actual VR setup.

LukeRoss Statement

LukeRoss' statement regarding the DMCA takedown of his Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod.

CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 is considered one of the biggest games of the modern era, except for its disastrous launch. It has since redeemed itself from persistent updates, turning its open-world cyberpunk RPG into what it should have been when it came out on December 10, 2020.

Apart from its lack of a third-person mode, CD Projekt Red has not added VR support. For a game that revels in neon-soaked dystopias and immersive cityscapes, this was a missed opportunity, which is why creators like LukeRoss took matters into their own hands and created what many consider the best VR mod for Cyberpunk 2077.

As of now, the fan-made VR mod has yet to return, LukeRoss has responded to CD Projekt Red's statement, saying that he's hoping for a "win-win solution that makes it possible for [Cyberpunk 2077]'s fans to keep enjoying Night City from the inside, in VR." He also added that their current state of affairs are not the best way to resolve this misunderstanding.
