Bloober Team has shared new insights into its upcoming Nintendo-exclusive horror title, Project M.
In a recent interview with VideoGamesChronicle (VGC), Bloober CEO Piotr Babieno, teased that “...fans of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Limbo, and Eternal Darkness will immediately feel at home.”
The statement itself was the signal horror fans needed, especially since Eternal Darkness, a cult-classic horror game, was mentioned. It’s high time Silicon Knights’ 2002 GameCube horror title gets recognized in the same league as Silent Hill and Resident Evil.
Project M's Relation to Eternal Darkness

For context, Eternal Darkness was a favorite among survival horror aficionados thanks to its innovative sanity system. Before Frictional Games’ Amnesia titles were a thing, Eternal Darkness paved the way for games with Lovecraftian elements. Witnessing horrifying creatures and supernatural events in-game causes it to spike, putting the protagonist in severe mental distress. Blurry screens, shifting colors, and hallucinations fill the screen, convincing even the players that they are going insane as their TV gets all glitched out. It was revolutionary for a game that was released in 2002.
The game never saw a sequel after a series of legal disputes between Silicon Knights and Epic Games. Fans are still hopeful that a possible sequel might arrive, as Nintendo’s persistent renewal of the Eternal Darkness trademark seems to point to something coming our way.
Bloober Team Might Revive a Cancelled Horror Game

In the same interview, the Nintendo Insider CEO also mentioned that Project M has gameplay “that could only exist on Nintendo hardware.” Speculation suggests it could use Nintendo’s gyro controls or Joy-Con features, such as the new mouse controls, or allow players to use them like a handgun or sword, similar to The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
At the moment, it’s too early to tell if this is the Eternal Darkness sequel or a spiritual successor. Some fans even believe that this might be related to Sadness, a scrapped Wii exclusive from former Bloober Team employees. It was a psychological horror set in pre-World War 1 Russia. Sadness utilizes the Wii’s motion-sensing mechanics to elevate the horror experience. Things like picking any item as a weapon were elements that added to its open-ended interactivity. One could say it was very ambitious for its time.
Unfortunately, it never saw the light of day after Nibris, the studio, ran into development hell. The project was eventually cancelled in 2010, which led to the company’s closure, but also opened new opportunities for the future, paving the way for Bloober Team’s creation.
All hands on deck for Project M, but everything we know about it is still a mystery. Maybe this is the Eternal Darkness sequel fans were raving about, or maybe it’s something completely new. Either way, with Bloober Team at the helm, we have high hopes that it will bring back Nintendo’s love for original survival horrors.
