For years, Call of Duty players have had a love-hate relationship with weapon camos.
On the one hand, they serve as a way to showcase dedication, skill, and the time invested.
On the other hand, earning them often came across as laborious rather than satisfying. Black Ops 6 took things too far by demanding 100 headshots per weapon to unlock the base camo set.
Shotguns and snipers suffered even more under requirements that didn’t really align with how those weapons are typically used.
That kind of grind burned players out quickly, and Treyarch appears to be aware of it. The studio has rebuilt the system in Black Ops 7, focusing on balance, flexibility, and lowering player fatigue.
How Is the Military Camo Grind Different This Time?
One of the most important changes in Black Ops 7 is the reduction in headshot requirements.

Instead of demanding 100 per gun, players now only need 80 headshots to finish all nine military camo tiers.
Even better, the unlock pacing has been completely restructured. Instead of long dry spells before earning rewards, the first camo now drops after just five headshots, with more coming every ten after that.
This consistent flow makes the grind feel less punishing and gives players more immediate goals to chase. Treyarch has also redesigned challenges for weapon categories that didn’t make sense before.
Shotguns now require point-blank kills instead of headshots, while snipers are tied to one-shot kills. Players move forward by sticking to natural weapon use instead of mismatched goals.
Are There More Ways to Unlock Camos Now?
Treyarch has expanded the system with several alternative unlock options for camos.

Sticking with one weapon long-term now unlocks three universal skins through prestige.
Weekly challenges reward two universal camos each season, with one unlocked at the halfway mark and a mastery skin granted for completing all weeks.
Seasonal events also rotate in limited-time camos to keep the rewards fresh. Perhaps the most exciting change, though, is that camo progression now stretches across every mode.
For the first time in the series, players can make progress in multiplayer, co-op campaign, zombies, and even Warzone (once Season 1 drops).
This gives fans of all playstyles a fair shot at earning cosmetic rewards without being forced into modes they don’t enjoy.
How Will Players Keep Track of Their Progress?
Players will now use a Camo Hub in Black Ops 7 to track challenges, see progress, and switch camos faster.

It’s a quality-of-life update, but one that makes the grind feel far more transparent and manageable than in older titles, where tracking progress meant digging through clunky menus or checking external guides.
Black Ops 7 redefines the grind with lower headshot requirements, better challenges, more camos, and flexible progression.
Players still have a long list of rewards to unlock, but the grind now feels fairer and far less draining. For the first time in years, grinding camos in Call of Duty might actually feel like fun instead of punishment.
