Battlefield 6’s test run revealed that Recon auto-spotting was handling more than it should.

Instead of rewarding awareness and clear comms, the system painted enemies with bright diamonds that let players fire at icons rather than silhouettes, which warped firefights across bright plazas and shadowy corridors alike.

In short, visibility reads and teamwork took a back seat to chasing red markers.

How Did the Devs Respond to Feedback?

According to Senior Console Combat Designer Matthew Nickerson, Battlefield Studios has cut auto-spotting down in the launch build, reducing its range, its overall power, and even how long tags stick.

The system is built so that intel stays important, but it has to be earned through intentional play rather than handed out for free.

Nickerson’s explanation tracks with what players felt in the test that the mechanic was too strong and turned gunfights into “shoot the Dorito” moments, so it is being toned down accordingly.

The studio wants spotting to stay a core part of Battlefield but rooted in deliberate choices like pings, vision tools, and squad play.

Passive sweeps that light up half the map undercut the tension that makes Battlefield’s big spaces sing.

Trimming auto-spotting aims to restore that give-and-take: smart reconnaissance feeds an assault, and sloppy intel leaves gaps that better teams can punish.
