Breath Of The Wild 2 Could Be Set In The Age Of Calamity Timeline - It's NOT A Prequel To Breath Of The Wild

Just when you think you've got Zelda all figured out, Nintendo throws a spanner in the works.

Age of Calamity recently launched on the Nintendo Switch, a spiritual prequel to Breath of the Wild.

I say spiritual as it's not actually a prequel at all, which we were led to believe.

If you've played the game, you'll know what I'm talking about, but if you haven't there are some big spoilers coming up.

Here's how Age of Calamity effects Breath of the Wild 2.

Age Of Calamity Is NOT A Breath Of The Wild Prequel

TIME TRAVEL! That's right, the game actually medals with time once again, a common theme in the Zelda franchise.

Princess Zelda accidentally sends a Guardian named Terrako back in time.

Terrako warns the citizens of Hyrule about the coming of Calamity Ganon, allowing our heroes to prepare for his arrival.

Due to Terrako's actions, Hyrule bands together and Zelda manages to awaken her powers before Ganon's arrival.

Terrako also prevents the Divine Beasts from being defeated by summoning Riju, Teba, Sidon, and Yunobo from the future.

At the end of the game, Terrako sacrifices its life to weaken Calamity Ganon allowing Zelda to seal him away.

You can kind of see where this is going...WE HAVE A NEW TIMELINE! As if it wasn't complicated enough...

The original Hyrule Warriors game wasn't considered canon and it's unclear if this one will also be considered part of the main storyline.

In the build-up to release, it was touted as a prequel to Breath of the Wild.

So does that mean we've got a new timeline and a new path on our hands that could be explored in the years to come?

Perhaps Breath of the Wild 2 is actually set in this new timeline. There's certainly something odd about Breath of the Wild 2's trailer and it could be hinting at this.

In the grand scheme, the two timelines resulted in Zelda and Link remaining alive, Hyrule was saved and Ganon was sealed away (minus a few casualties).

There's a rhyme and a reason behind every action Nintendo has taken when it comes to the Zelda franchise and releasing Age of Calamity with this story could be a logical setup for the next game.

It certainly explains how the game plans to re-use the same environment while making it giving it new life and changing it from the original.

Or, it could be, just one of the many spanners thrown in to stop a predictable ending.
