Ubisoft surprised us with a new Tom Clancy game reveal, and it's not quite what we expected.
Tom Clancy's XDefiant is a self-described "punk mosh pit" game, a 6v6 arena shooter pulling bits and pieces from across the Tom Clancy world.
Ubisoft said XDefiant is still early in development, but showed off a brief overview trailer and shared details during the game's reveal.
There's also a closed playtest you can sign up for on all platforms that's set to go live on August 5.
Here's everything we know so far about Tom Clancy's XDefiant.
What Is Tom Clancy's XDefiant?
XDefiant is Ubisoft's take on the FPS multiplayer genre with nods to the Tom Clancy universe, including The Division and Splinter Cell.
It's a 6v6 game with two modes at launch, multiple classes, and customizable characters called Defiants.
Ubisoft promised extensive post-launch support, including new Defiants, new modes, and more. In other words, XDefiant won't be abandoned like Hyper Scape - at least, in theory it won't be.
Tom Clancy's XDefiant Release Date
Ubisoft said XDefiant is still early in development and didn't share a firm release date yet.
Registration is open for the XDefiant playtest on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, though it requires a Ubisoft account to get started. The first XDefiant playtest begins August 5.
Tom Clancy's XDefiant Classes
XDefiant has four classes for now. They're pretty standard to the genre, but all come from different Tom Clancy games.

- Outcast (The Division) - Healers
- Echelon (Splinter Cell) - support, gathers and hides intel
Tom Clancy's XDefiant Maps
Ubisoft said XDefiant will feature 10 maps at launch. These are divided into standard arena maps and maps for more linear gameplay depending on the chosen mode.
Tom Clancy's XDefiant Modes
XDefiant includes domination and ringleader modes for arena play and the more objective-oriented escort and zone control modes for the linear maps.
Here's the debut XDefiant trailer showing the game in action.
And here's the developer discussion going further in-depth on what to expect from the game.
