Court Documents Suggest Rocket League "Next" Is Coming To PS5 and Xbox Series X|S


The legal battle between Epic Games and Apple is now in full swing. Having gone to court yesterday, this lawsuit has revealed significant details about Epic Games' upcoming plans. Having acquired Psyonix in 2019, Rocket League is at the forefront of these.

Alongside news of a mobile edition - which appears to be separate from Rocket League Sideswipe - these court documents revealed details about Rocket League "Next". It's already backwards compatible on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but this could offer us a full upgrade.

Court Documents Suggest Rocket League Is Coming To PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

As detailed in the court slides, Next is specifically listed as involving a "next-generation client with full game experience across all platforms, including mobile". That would retain cross-play, cross-progress, and lists plans for a mobile beta before launching on other platforms.

It's unclear what they mean by this new client, but given how Epic Games are porting Fortnite onto Unreal Engine 5, we may see something similar. Listed with an estimated Q2 2021 release date, it's worth noting these documents are dated from last June, so plans may have changed, but we'll keep you updated.
