Dear readers, you’ll be happy to know that we did it - tournaments in Rocket League are getting some absolutely massive changes. While not the only thing that players have been clamouring for, this is definitely something that should bring a bit of vitality back to the game.
So, along with more tournaments, which is good news anyway, we’re also getting 2v2 tournaments and even Extra Mode tournaments. Both of these will offer extra chances to earn some of that glorious tournament loot, and that can only be a good thing. That’s not all that’s changing here though.

Tournaments For Everyone
So, 2v2s will work as you’d expect, which is good, although it’ll share an MMR with the 3s tourneys, so progress in one will lead to progress in the other. The Extra Modes will be a rotation of Hoops, Rumble, Dropshot, and Snow Day, and they won’t affect your MMR at all. That means they’re a pretty good chance for players to mess about in the modes without worrying too much about rank.
Alongside an increase from 78 to 143 weekly tournaments, which is nice, there’s also a change being made to undersized parties. That basically means when you enter a tournament as a two in a threes tournament, although why you’d do that now that there’ll be a 2v2 tournament is beyond us.
From Season 4 onwards, you’ll only be able to enter a tournament with a friend if they’re within three ranks of you. That means that if you’re a Champ 3 and your friend is a Diamond 3, then you’ll be fine, but if you’re a Champ 3 and they’re a Plat 1, then you won’t be able to play together unless you have a full team. It’s all pretty interesting stuff, and while it’s not everything players have ever wanted, it’s definitely a nice step in the right direction, and it does show that Psyonix is listening to the players.
