Sony Acquires Firesprite Games, Making Them The 14th PlayStation Studios Team

Sony has announced they've acquired Firesprite Games. Best known for developing The Persistence, The Playroom, and The Playroom VR, they've now become the 14th developer to join PlayStation Studios, with many staff members having previously worked for SIE Studio Liverpool.

Speaking through the PlayStation Blog, PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst stated:

Firesprite is a creative and ambitious studio that is exceptional at building incredible experiences that truly showcase the potential of our hardware. The team’s technical and creative capabilities will be paramount to growing our stellar catalogue of exclusive games, and I think you’ll be excited for what’s to come.

Talking about this further, Graeme Ankers, Managing Director, also weighed in on the acquisition, confirming:

At Firesprite, we’re always striving to bring something new to a game or genre and developing for new technologies is a driving force of our passion. Joining PlayStation Studios will allow us to amplify this passion, working more closely on cutting-edge hardware without any limitations and furthering our studio’s heritage of creativity and technical innovation to offer some truly unique experiences for PlayStation fans.

It follows on from Sony's recent acquisitions of Nixxes Software and Housemarque, which both occurred only two months ago. Given Firesprite's history in virtual reality, this could be a move by Sony to shore up support for PSVR's new-gen successor, but that remains speculative. For now, we'll keep you informed as we learn more.
