Sony Faces Heavy Criticism For PlayStation Store's Handling Of Indie Games

Sony is once again facing criticism for how they've handled indie games on the PlayStation Store. Without specifically naming the company - likely for legal reasons - Neon Doctrine's co-founder Iain Garner recently took to Twitter, calling them "Platform X".

Advising they were operating "a very successful console" and that it "does not have Games Pass!", this description immediately rules out Xbox as the target. Afterwards, several sources have since corroborated that he's referring to Sony, rather than Nintendo.

Firstly, he explains that Platform X "gives developers no ability to manage their games", saying that you have to "jump through hoops, beg and plead" for any sort of attention. Notably, he confirms the wishlists have no effect and any personal marketing "means nothing" to them.


From there, Garner then elaborates upon "red tape" surrounding product launches, requiring developers to generate platform specific trailers and blog copy text. Furthermore, he also claims that publishers have no control over when games are discounted, meaning they have to be invited to a specific weekly sales event. He then claims launch discounts aren't allowed without prior approval, also suggesting that Platform X charges $25,000 to secure a featured PS Store spot.

While he admits Platform X has "awesome hardware", Garner calls this process "straight out of the early 2000s", before concluding with a rather defeated statement of "I have no idea how to succeed on this platform and they won’t tell me. Even if I do succeed, they may screw me anyway." Urging people to complain to Platform X about lack of game sales, it raises significant questions about Sony's indie policies.
