PS5 3D Audio Games: The Best Games That Use Tempest 3D Audio on the PS5

PS5 3D Audio is set to revolutionise how players hear in-game sounds, but what games support it?

With Tempest 3D Audio placing players into an immersive soundscape environment, PS5 owners with high-quality gaming headsets should be able to pinpoint the directions of certain audio cues in a variety of situations.

While not every game supports 3D Audio technology, there's a strong selection of titles that do.

Here's a closer look at what's out there.

PS5 3D Audio Games

In a blog post released before the PS5's launch, Sony detailed a selection of first-party games that would support its 3D Audio. These include:

Horzion Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 will also support 3D Audio when they release. As for other titles, the decision to utilise 3D Audio rests on the developer's shoulders. The following games also have been confirmed to use Tempest 3D Audio:

The upcoming PS5 version of Ghostrunner will also support 3D Audio, according to 505 Games.

Will any headphones work with PS5 3D Audio?

While initial reports suggested only the PULSE 3D headset works with Tempest 3D Audio, Sony has confirmed that its new 3D Audio engine works with any gaming headset. Not every headset will have the same quality of audio, so we'd recommend picking up one of these headsets.

The reason every headset is compatible is because the 3D Audio stems from the PS5's built-in audio engine, rather than the headphones itself. On the PS4, only compatible PlayStation headsets supported 3D Audio for this reason.

It's worth noting, however, that while all headphones are compatible, attempting to get 3D Audio through even the best external speakers or soundbars for PS5 will not work.

Sony has stated that 3D Audio support for speakers will come at a later date.

Do PS4 games have 3D audio on PS5?

Sony has not officially confirmed that PS4 games support 3D audio on the PlayStation 5, but reports suggest that some games do benefit from audio upgrades on the next-gen console.

In Ghost of Tsushima, for example, 3D Audio was only available via the Platinum headsets. However, as reported by Sucker Punch's Audio Director, 3D Audio is available when playing Ghost of Tsushima on the PS5 with any headset.

What this means is that any games that supported 3D Audio on the PS4 - including God of War and Uncharted 4 - will also support the PS5's 3D Audio, too.
