Pokemon Sword and Shield: Second Gym Guide For Water Type Leader Nessa

Pokemon Sword and Shield allows players to conquer the familiar 8 gyms that the franchise has become known for as they explore the Galar region in the hopes of becoming champion.

The second gym leader that you will encounter in your journey is the water type, master Nessa.

Be sure to watch our wide variety of Pokemon content here!

Located in Hulbury, which is a city surrounded by the waterfront and fishing spots, Nessa's gym challenge is the classical puzzle-style; fighting her can seem challenging depending on your team.

What Do I Do If I Picked Scorbunny?

Trainers who have picked Scorbunny would have an easier time with the first gym leader Milo, but now go up against a fire type Pokemon's worst nightmare.

Fortunately, this is the stage of the game where we have been exposed to several Pokemon of all various typings.

Some viable options that you should consider before tackling Nessa are:

  • Pikachu - Found on Route 4
  • Leafeon - Found by evolving Eevee, which is found on Route 4
  • Jolteon - Found by evolving Eevee, which is found on Route 4.
  • Gossifleur - Found on Route 2 and 3
  • Yamper - Found on Route 2 and 4
  • Electrike - Found on Route 4

Gym Challenge

As we alluded to above, Nessa's Gym Challenge is similar to the classic puzzle style one, players will need to try and navigate through a course while turning on/off pipes to access to the further areas.

There are multiple trainers that are unavoidable throughout this course, these trainers will use water-type Pokemon so just be aware of that but they are rather easy to tackle.

A much easier challenge then Milo's and one players should have no trouble taking down.

Simply follow the path to the right, once you get the left hand side of the puzzle, you will need to go past the blue and red switch, all the way to the end (with the yellow switch) before making your way to the gym leader.

Nessa's Pokemon

Opposed to Milo, Nessa uses three Pokemon instead of two and has the ability to Dynamax her final Pokemon, Drednaw.

The rest of Nessa's party is an LVL 22 Goldeen and an LVL 23 Arrokuda, which should not give you any problems.

One of the things to be wary of is Drednaw's typing, as it is a rock-water dual typing so any grass type moves will demolish it.

You can easily get hold of a Pikachu or an Eevee for free if you have played Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu or Pokemon: Let's Go Eevee - here's our guide to do so.

Otherwise, they can be found on Route 4.

We recommend that you bring at least two Pokemon that are either electric or grass types. Be sure that they are at least LVL 20-25.
