Pokemon Sword and Shield: Eighth Gym Guide for Dragon Type Leader Raihan


Pokemon Sword and Shield allows players to conquer the familiar 8 gyms that the franchise has become known for as they explore the Galar region in the hopes of becoming champion.

The final gym leader you will encounter is the feared dragon-type leader Raihan who leads Hammerlocke City, the central point of the Galar region. Like any dragon type leader, you should expect the worse when battling this one and his strong variety of Pokemon proves this. We'll take you through how to conquer Raihan and his unique battle style!

Counters for Dragon Types

Since generation one, dragon-types have been the most feared typing in all of Pokemon. Up until they released the fairy type, there was only two direct counters for dragon types: dragon and ice type. The Galar region lays waste to an ample amount of dragon, ice and fairy type so having one of these Pokemon is not to uncommon at this point in the game,

  • Dragon
  • Ice
  • Fairy

Gym Challenge

It seems the theme of the last two gyms is just battling other trainers, as Raihan will meet you in the Hammerlocke vault and will have you battle three of his hand-picked trainers. The catch to these battles is that they are all double battles, which is also how you will battle Raihan himself.

Piers

The weird thing about battling Raihan is that he only uses two dragon-type Pokemon. Since all of these battles are double battles, the first two Pokemon he will send out are a LVL 47 Flygon and a LVL 46 Gigalith. Although he does use dragon-type Pokemon he takes advantage of Flygon's sandstorm ability, which can be tormenting as you battle.

The final two Pokemon that Raihan will send out along with the Pokemon he will Dynamax is a LVL 46 Sandaconda, a pure ground type, and his final Pokemon is a LVL 48 Duraludon. The latter will be the one he Dynamax's and is also one of the strangest typings in the game at steel/dragon.
