Pokemon GO players got recent news that PokeStop and Gym interaction distance would soon be increasing. Out of all the changes that were proposed, players are focused on this rollback more than anything else.
Last year, in light of the pandemic, Niantic introduced some new features to Pokemon GO. Those included remote raids, effective incense while remaining still, and increased range when interacting with PokeStops and Gyms. With restrictions reducing in many countries, Niantic has decided to revert some of those features.
"Previously, PokéStop and Gym interaction distances were increased, to enable people to engage from further away. After this change, the distance will revert back to the standard distance when it makes sense in different places, though may be increased during future events and as part of certain features."
Players saw the changes and immediately voiced their concerns on social media. Almost every complaint was about the distance changes, and they have now taken further action.
Pokemon GO players start a petition to keep the PokeStop distance
Pokemon GO players took further action and they started a petition on Change.org. The goal is to accumulate 75,000 signatures to keep the Gym and PokeStop distances the same.
According to the petition description, the distance that was implemented last year has made the game safer to play and more accessible overall. Niantic had "gone back on their word" and is another one of the reasons for the petition.
At the time of this writing, the Pokemon GO petition has nearly 65,000 signatures. It's clear the community wants the change to stay, and time will tell if Niantic listens.
