RTX 3080 Ti vs 2080 Ti: Which Should You Buy?

NVIDIA has been increasing the performance of its graphics cards with each generation; the performance jump from the RTX 2000 series to the RTX 3000 series was massive.

This has led many gamers to feel that they need to have an RTX 3000 series graphics card to game at high refresh rates.

That isn't true; the RTX 2080 Ti still offers fantastic performance for many gamers, allowing for high resolutions and high refresh rates while taking considerably less space inside the PC due to its smaller cooler.

The Upcoming RTX 3080 Ti or the RTX 2080 Ti: Which should you get?

The RTX 2080 Ti graphics card offers some impressive performance for most gamers and is ideal for gaming at 1080p or 1440p resolutions at high refresh rates.

Many gamers began to realize if they turn on the Ray tracing in-game, the RTX 2080 Ti had a bit of trouble keeping the 144 Hz refresh rate as the first generation Ray Tracing cores had trouble keeping up.

The specs released for the RTX 3080 Ti shows that it uses the second generation Ray Tracing cores that offer significantly faster speeds and provide considerably better performance.

This will translate to significantly faster refresh rates and smoother gameplay at 4K or even 8K resolutions and allow gamers to enjoy the Ray tracing feature at 144 Hz.

Should You Wait or Upgrade?

Deciding to upgrade your graphics card can be challenging, especially when every new generation of GPU seems to offer significantly better performance than its predecessors.

The RTX 3080 Ti's performance, when compared to the RTX 2080 Ti's performance, will most likely be significantly better at higher resolutions and faster refresh rates.

So if you use a 4K monitor with a high refresh rate, upgrading makes perfect sense, but if you use a 1080p monitor or 1440p monitor with a 144 Hz refresh rate, you may not see a huge difference when gaming.

Another important factor to consider is price; the RTX 3080 Ti will have a retail price of $1,199, while the RTX 2080 Ti will most likely drop in price once the RTX 3080 Ti is released.
