The Nintendo Switch has inarguably helped reverse Nintendo’s fortunes after the Wii U, but the console is far from perfect. The biggest issue for many is still its online infrastructure.
Monster Hunter: Rise is likely to be one of the systems more popular online games, with a focus on squadding-up and team play, and Capcom really has shown Nintendo how it’s done.

The best part about the Monster Hunter franchise for years now has been teaming up with friends and clocking the heads of giant beasts as a party. Many had rightly wondered how many hoops Nintendo would make players jump through to achieve that, but actually, it’s fairly painless.
Struggling against a monster? Use the Join Request to signal that you’re open to other hunters. Nice and simple. You can also create a lobby that focuses on hunting a certain monster so that you can gain like-minded hunters for your party.
Playing with friends? You can create a lobby, and any in-game friends can just hop straight in. It’s a far cry from the bizarre shenanigans required to party up in first-party Nintendo titles.
Unfortunately, Nintendo and Capcom weren’t able to sort a voice chat option. Some games use the phone app, some games (like Fortnite), have native chat, and for anything else, most people just use something like Discord.
Monster Hunter: Rise falls into the latter category, so be prepared to fire up your third-party chat app of choice.
Still, with a fairly simple lobby system and an actual in-game friend list (you’d be surprised how many Switch games don’t have that functionality), Monster Hunter Rise is the new gold standard for multiplayer on the Switch.
The game’s netcode is solid, it runs beautifully, and shows that maybe a Switch Pro isn’t as needed as we first thought… unless it supports proper party chat, in which case we’ll buy it on day one.
