Black Ops Cold War Zombies LEAKS: Release Date, Maps, Gameplay, Die Maschine, Crossplay, Tranzit Remake And Everything You Need To Know

Black Ops Cold War is finally here and fans are pumped for the return of Zombies!

While the story isn't revisiting past tales, it will continue on in the same universe with small nostalgic references to the past.

The swarm of undead return in many familiar ways as well as a lot of new ones too.

Even if you're not a fan of Call of Duty games, Zombies has proven to be an irreplaceable take on the genre; which originally started out as a last-minute add-on for World At War.

Here's everything we know about Zombies in Black Ops Cold War.

The full zombies experience will arrive with the launch of Black Ops Cold War, which is the 13th November 2020.

TheGamingRevolution believes we could get DLC for zombie maps than usual, as all multiplayer maps will be free - meaning there could be a zombies pass.

Die Maschine Story

Players are apart of 'Requiem' a CIA backed international response team led by Grigori Weaver; a Russian-American that Black Ops fans should be familiar with.

They are sent in to investigate an outbreak at the facility and uncover decades of secrets that could upset the global order.

The team will be at odds against a Soviet-led group named 'Omega Group'. This group are just as interested in investigating the unnatural occurrences around the world.

During the story, players will encounter unnamed and mysterious characters with new intel and information about what's happening; it's vital to telling the story.

It also confirms the return of Samantha Maxis, who has now grown up and is working for Requiem.

Will The Original Story Continue?

The Treyarch Zombies storyline came to an arguably anti-climatic conclusion during Black Ops 4's DLC 4. "Tag Der Toten" was a remake of the Black Ops 1 Zombies map Call of the Dead; one of many remakes that year.

In the final map, you play as the Victus crew and aim to solve the paradox that has unfolded and strive to put an end to the chaotic story that has unfolded over the past 10 years.

So what's next for Call of Duty zombies? The story will continue after Tag Der Toten and it will be with the Aether storyline; it's the same universe, but a different story.

This is truly the end of Primis, Ultimis and Victis. Everyone and everything was sent to the Dark Aether and the universe was free from corruption...but not for long; the campaign and zombies story "has always been in the same multiverse".

Frank Woods will feature in the mode as well!

You can tell it's the Aether universe due to the Monkey Bomb and Juggernog. There will still be perks, pack-a-punch and other core features, but there will be more barriers to play and different ways to play the mode.

While it's a new story, it may have many references to old stories and brings back old features.

So it seems that rather than the zombies experience being brought into the 1980s, we may be experiencing a derelict venue that has been relatively untouched, since WW2.

Chaos Story Returning?

What's for certain is that the Chaos story will NOT be returning. The Chaos story was not enjoyed by the community and what they have really warmed to is a more realistic and grounded style. It's rumoured the new story will be based around Vietnam to reflect the tone of the game.

The release of the Ancient Evil map seemingly suggested that the Chaos story for Zombies would continue throughout the cycle of Black Ops 4.

But after two maps, the Chaos story appears to be dead in the water, with nothing clear surrounding its ending.

According to many players, Activision did not like the Chaos story, implying that this is the reason as to why the story has yet to be concluded by Treyarch.

But there's a chance it may return in some fashion. Actor Andrew Morgado has been teasing his involvement in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on Instagram.

Morgado voice the character Bruno Delacroix in the Chaos story - he simply captioned the trailer: “Cool stuff is happening.”

Before you get too excited, it could be for an unrelated role. It's not the first time a Zombies character has been recast for a Call of Duty game, Steve Blum (who voices Clint Dempsey) voiced Donnie "Ruin" Walsh.

It could be that Morgado is voicing an Operator or Campaign character. It could even be he is lending his voice for an Easter Egg to reference past zombie stories (something that Treyarch does regularly).

With the release slowly approaching and new information surrounding the game coming to the forefront in every other week, could there be a chance for the Chaos story to be revived on the new release?

Features, Gameplay And What We Know So Far

Based on what we know so far and from leakers, here are some features we can expect from the new zombies:

  • No Mini Map
  • Training Mode added
  • Perk Machines return (including Juggernog) and look like the ones from WWII
  • Pack-A-Punch returns
  • Mystery Box return
  • Graffiti is related to Easter Eggs
  • Flashlight on your weapon until the power is turned on
  • Teleportation machine and Gondola on Die Maschine
  • A way to win zombies (potentially meaning two modes)
  • Unified Progression across all Black Ops Cold War modes
  • Weapon Rarity for all weapons
  • Exfil ending
  • Equipment added
  • Field Upgrades added
  • Ping System
  • Scorestreaks added
  • Loot and crafting system
  • Skill Tier/Upgrade system for perks and equipment

The gameplay has been changed, but familiar. Updates focus on enhancing what makes zombies fun.

This year, loadouts will progress across all modes; your global rank and progression stay connected.

Players no longer need to start with a pistol, they can start with what they feel like. Every weapon has a path to be an uber weapon.

You will get a lethal, tactical and support slot to help your fight against the undead.

A new Exfil system allows players to get out and get some rewards...but it's not easy!

On the official Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War website, a description for Zombies has been added with part of the text redacted.

"Players will bring a Cold War arsenal of weapons and equipment into the next evolution of Treyarch's signature Zombies co-operative experience.

It sounds like a fresh start so to speak for the game, which is probably a good thing. As the story unfolded in the past games, the story got more complicated and the loose ends became a bit less plausible.

It also seemed that to appease fans, they continued to bring back the same characters despite being killed off.

While the story was a masterpiece, it made it difficult for Treyarch to end as strongly as it began.

With a fresh start, they can really plan a story that works and will last long term.

Code Name 'Silver'

According to Prototype Warehouse, the zombie mode is under the codename "Silver".

It's unknown why it's called this and what it means, but it's a name that emerged from 'The Red Door' alpha.

Players are apart of 'Requiem' a CIA backed international response team led by Grigori Weaver; a Russian-American that Black Ops fans should be familiar with.

You can play as one of the many Operators within Black Ops Cold War's multiplayer or the new campaign characters including Frank Woods!

Steiner is also involved in some way.

Modern Warzone has noted that the following bosses will be in the game according to TheGamingRevolution:

  • Nova Dog
  • Pyro Panzer
  • Russian Mech
  • Hazmat Zombie
  • Mimic Zombie
  • Summoner Zombie

We're returning to a very familiar location in zombies, but with a twist - it's called 'Die Maschine'.

Nacht Der Untoten is the lucky map being resurrected, however, it's far different to what you may remember.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN: The famous staircase in the first-ever zombies level

UNDERGROUND: The map looks very different with new areas to explore

Die Maschine will allow players to explore outside the ravaged, boarded up bunker, as well as investigate the downstairs facility.

Now TGR has revealed a bunch of information about the maps:

  • New map called Firebase Z 'ZM_Pink' which is a bonus map for launch and not related to the story. It is set in Vietnam.
  • 'ZM_Silver' is a Nacht Der Untoten remake, set in the same location but during the Cold War and it will be called Die Machine (which means 'The Machine')
  • New sections have been added to allow nuclear testing
  • Large parts of the map is based outside of the original building
  • Features different endings
  • Regular Nacht Der Untoten returns as well
  • Another map is set in Berlin called 'ZM_Platinum'. Reportedly arriving in Season 4, this could be a Kino Der Toten remake; but it has experienced a Die Machine type makeover.
  • One final map is codenamed 'Giant', which is speculated to be a Der Riese

It sounds like Tranzit is not currently in the game and isn't scheduled for launch.

Skill Tiers

To upgrade your Perks, you’ll need to earn Raw Aetherium Crystals by reaching milestone rounds within the game, or through successful exfiltration.

What’s more, you’ll be able to upgrade skills related to Field Upgrades, Ammo Mods, and Weapon Classes to help you stay alive even longer as you collect and invest more Aetherium Crystals.

Over time, you’ll use these crystals to improve the tools in your arsenal, improving their damage and utility to help you reach higher rounds.

As an example, upgrading the Elemental Pop Perk to Tier III will grant the following effects:

  • Tier I - Equipment damage also has a small chance to apply a random base Ammo Mod effect.
  • Tier II - Reduce Ammo Mod cooldowns by 20%.
  • Tier III - When a random Ammo Mod is applied, it uses your current Skill Tier instead of the base.

In Black Ops 4, the Perks system was overhauled with several fan-favourite Perks being omitted, much to the dismay of many Zombies players.

Perks are drunk out of a can instead of a bottle and the machines look very different as a result.

Here are the confirmed perks:

  • Jugger-Nog: Increase maximum health by 50.
  • Quick Revive: Reduce the time it takes to regen to full health by 50%. Reduce the time it takes to revive an ally by 50%.
  • Speed Cola: Increase reload speed by 15%.
  • Stamin-Up: Increase run and sprint speed.
  • Deadshot Daiquiri: Aiming down sights moves to enemy critical location. Remove scope sway.
  • Elemental Pop: Every bullet has a small chance to apply a random base Ammo Mod effect.

All perks are now better versions of their former selves and they can be upgraded up to 3 times.

To upgrade your Perks, you’ll need to earn Raw Aetherium Crystals by reaching milestone rounds within the game, or through successful exfiltration.

There’s no longer a limit to how many different Perks you can consume.

More perks will also be added at a later date.

Around the map, you can craft and find lethal, tactical, and support equipment. While the lethal and tacticals are very similar to what you know, the support equipment is home to high-powered offensive weaponry.

Players can also deploy Field Upgrades as proactive abilities that add another layer to squad-based tactics.

Charge them up by killing zombies, then deploy them in times of desperate need.

Pack-a-Punch returns but also includes a rarity. The higher the rarity, the greater the damage output and attachments for the weapon.

Weapons come in five tiers of rarity: Common/Loadout, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary.

Buying your favourite weapon off of the wall is now different every time with random attachments thrown into the mix, and the Mystery Box actually increases its odds of rolling high-rarity weapons as the rounds get higher.

Previously, if you found a strong weapon in the Mystery Box, you had very little motivation to return. Now, even if you roll a weapon that you’re happy with early in the game, you can return 10 Rounds later and try to roll the Legendary version.

The Mystery Box also now includes Support items, such as the Sentry Turret and War Machine, which always come in handy.

Field Upgrades

Zombies Field Upgrades available at launch include:

  • Frost Blast – Create a frigid blast of wind that deals frost damage and slows enemies caught inside of it. Slowed enemies take additional damage.
  • Healing Aura – Summon beams of energy down on yourself and allies to instantly heal to full health.
  • Energy Mine – Create a mine of pure energy that detonates on proximity of enemies, dealing explosive damage.
  • Ring of Fire – Create a ring of ethereal fire that boosts damage for you and allies. Normal enemies who enter gain a burning effect that deals fire damage. Lasts 15 seconds.
  • Aether Shroud – Phase into the Dark Aether for 5 seconds becoming hidden from enemy detection.

Armor And Salvage

Replacing the crafted shield of previous Zombies experiences, Armor provides a 360-degree layer of protection from the armies of the undead.

Armor can be found as a Rare drop from enemies or purchased using Salvage.

Although Armor is partially repaired by picking up the occasional Armor Shard dropped from certain enemies, it’s a finite resource and you’ll find yourself vulnerable again once you run out of Salvage to repair it.

You can also fully repair Armor by picking up a Carpenter Power-Up.

Armor can also be upgraded two additional levels.

Sometimes you just need a little extra power to get out of a tight spot, and that’s where Support comes into play. At launch, the available Support selection will include:

  • Combat Bow
  • Sentry Turret
  • War Machine
  • Chopper Gunner
  • Self-Revive

Keep an eye out for one of these to pop out of the Mystery Box.

Custom Loadouts

Empowering players to bring all of their unlocked weapons and cosmetics into Zombies takes the action up a notch and gets everyone into higher rounds faster.

You can only bring in a single weapon and a Field Upgrade with your Zombies loadout.

Furthermore, that single weapon will have its attachments and cosmetics, but it will be the lowest rarity available (Common).

Pack-A-Punch is returning as a buildable and can be obtained via a quest.

Weapon upgrades/double Pack-A-Punch abilities all return including one new one called 'Plasmatic Burst'.

Loot And Crafting

In Black Ops Cold War Zombies, every zombie has a small chance of dropping resources including Salvage, Armor, and even lethal and tactical equipment.

As you unlock equipment and Scorestreaks through standard player progression, that content will become available at the crafting table in-game and can be crafted using resources.

Rarity is also assigned to loot based on its effectiveness.

Zombie Types

It's hard to see what zombies are in the game based on this short teaser, @TheGamingRevolution has pointed out that a new zombie type can be seen briefly in the clip.

This one is wearing a hazmat suit and is actually dead.

New 'boss' zombies potentially include:

  • Pyro Panzer
  • Russian Mech
  • Mimic Zombie
  • Nova Dog
  • Summoner Zombies
  • Brutus (probably just references)
  • Avogadro (probably just references)

Dead Ops Arcade 3

The Dead Ops Arcade mini-game has been a hidden game that Treyarch has implemented in some of its previous titles.

It's a top-down arcade-style zombie game, based on the Zombies mode.

Some teasers have been found in the game code for the Red Door Alpha, hinting at a possible return.

Considering Treyarch release one every other game, there's a high chance it's returning.

It's unknown if cross-play will be supported for Zombies, but we're predicting it's more than likely.

There's been a huge emphasis on cross-platform play and cross-generational play this year, with every console able to play with each other in multiplayer and Wazone.

It's almost inevitable that players will be able to, seeing as you need an Activision account to gain access to online features.

All post-launch content is free, everyone can enjoy the new story without spending a single penny.

Unified Progression

Zombies is tied to a universal progression system, meaning you can rank up your loadouts in any mode and carry it over to the Zombies mode.

Intel System

There’s new intel to collect in the Zombies maps as players experience the story.

Unlocking this intel will reveal new pieces to what’s coming in this new Black Ops Zombies world.

You can find audio logs, transmissions, artefacts, and cyphers to help you unlock more clues about what’s happening in the game.
