Niantic’s Pokemon GO has been a huge success and continues to be a popular title, especially since the devs fixed the game to make it more playable indoors due to the pandemic, so it’s easy to see why players got really excited when it was announced that Niantic would work on a Pikmin mobile game, tentatively called the Pikmin App, that also uses augmented reality.

Recently, Niantic has let fans in Singapore try out the Pikmin App and if reports are anything to go by, Pokemon GO fans are going to be very happy as the game plays similarly to the popular mobile game, while also having enough of that Pikmin quirkiness that caught the attention of players when it first arrived on the Gamecube and even the most recent re-release of Pikmin 3 on Nintendo Switch.

With some player feedback now available, here’s everything you need to know about the Pikmin App.

How Does Pikmin App Work?

Players start out with a number of Pikmin Seedlings and they start to grow as you collect “Step Energy,” which is done by walking around the real world. A bit like Pokemon GO.

The more Pikmin-like elements come into play when you pluck them out, each of which comes with their own color and can be named, and players can even go on expeditions with their chosen Pikmin.

How Many Pikmin Are In The Game?

According to a report by VGC there are seven species of Pikmin players can currently grow. This includes:

  • Red Pikmin
  • Blue Pikmin
  • Yellow Pikmin
  • Purple Pikmin
  • White Pikmin
  • Rock Pikmin
  • Winged Pikmin
  • Pikmin Attributes
  • Pikmin Flowers

How Do Pikmin Expeditions Work?

Expeditions are little campaigns where players can choose a group of Pikmin so that they can go on a campaign and get some special items, including Postcards, new digital items that your Pikmin can pick up that show real-life locations from Pokemon GO and Ingress.

Does The Pikmin App Have Microtransactions?

Since it was free-to-play, Pokemon GO made money by having microtransactions where players could pay for more bag space, pokeballs, or other items that were useful in the game.

Pikmin App beta testers have stated that there are no microtransactions, but since this is the test phase, they could always add in-game purchases afterwards.

Pikmin App Release Date

As of this writing, no Pikmin App release date has been announced so this is gonna be a bit of a wait for players. It’s likely that the Pikmin mobile game will come out late this year or mid-2022, though we’ll have to wait and see.
