Days Gone 2 Cancelled By Sony, Report Claims

Update - June 2

Bend Studio announced it's developing a new IP, which means if Days Gone 2 is in development we won't see it for a long while yet.

Original Story - April 9

Plans for Days Gone 2 have reportedly been shelved by Sony, it's claimed.

A new Bloomberg report released earlier today claims that Sony Interactive Entertainment has passed on the option to release a sequel to Sony Bend's open-world zombie game. It's believed that despite being profitable, Days Gone 2 was not greenlit due to production issues and the critical reception from critics.

Days Gone, ironically, is free to play right now as part of the PS Plus April lineup of games.

The Bloomberg report suggests that a 2019 pitch for Days Gone 2 was rejected by Sony.

“Although the first game had been profitable, its development had been lengthy and critical reception was mixed, so a Days Gone 2 wasn’t seen as a viable option,” Bloomberg states.

Back in December of 2019, studio director Chris Reese spoke to GamesRadar and noted the following: "This is a world that we want to keep breathing more life into, and explore many, many different avenues. So who knows, we'll see!"

Informed journalist Jason Schreier has also claimed that one team at Sony Bend was later assigned to help Naughty Dog with a multiplayer game.

This is likely the Last of Us Factions Mode, which was actually leaked back in August when some footage surfaced.

Schreier also suggested that a second team within Sony Bend was also assigned to work on a new Uncharted game. Again, something which has been talked about quite a bit in the tail end of 2020.

Supposedly, Sony Bend devs feared they might be absorbed into Naughty Dog, and as a result asked to be taken off this new Uncharted game. They're now working on a new game, but as noted by Schreier on Twitter: "I don't know if that game is still in development. It was all on paper at Bend".

It's been suggested that this internal conflict between Sony and Sony Ben lead to two of the studio's most senior members leaving the studio. Writer and director John Garvin along with director Jeff Ross departed the studio in December 2020.
