Eidos Montreal's next game, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, is changing the superhero team's origins. Speaking on the PlayStation Blog yesterday, Eidos Montreal's senior creative director, Jean-Francois Dugas, revealed changes to Peter Quill, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot.
Star-Lord's origins still see him being kidnapped from Earth as a child, though Peter Quill takes his name from a favourite band on Earth, rather than because it sounded cool. However, Dugas then confirmed they're implementing a different team backstory.
Marvel's Guardians of The Galaxy Changes Up The Team's Individual Origins
Within this universe, there's now a massive intergalactic war that took place 12 years ago, feeding into the backstories of individual Guardians. As part of this, Drax killed Thanos during that war, while Gamora defected to help end that ongoing war.
As such, it sounds like Marvel has given Eidos Montreal freedom in how they interpret this story. We can expect further details before it launches on October 26, which arrives on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, alongside a cloud version for Nintendo Switch.
