Kena: Bridge of Spirits - Tips for Defeating Sprout

Sprout is the first big boss of the game and though it may look like a walking pile of sticks, it can put up a good fight. Luckily for you by the time you go up against Sprout, you will already have been introduced to many of the mechanics of the game and your adorable side-kicks The Rot. We've put together a few tips to help you take down Sprout without sacrificing too much health.

Shield Yourself!

When you meet Sprout you will be able to use your Shield ability for the first time. Using this will protect you from Sprout's brutal attacks so it's a good idea to use it if you don't have enough time or space to dodge out of the way. It will save you valuable health.

However, you need to remember that using your shield can be risky. If you use this ability against one of Sprout's attacks, it will then charge up an even stronger attack if you stay in the same place. The strong attack will destroy your shield and take away a chunk of Kena's health.

Watch Your Shield Meter

In the bottom left-hand corner of your screen, you will have two bars appear whilst you're fighting. The top one is your health and your bottom one is your shield meter. Your shield meter will wear down a little bit each time you use it.

If Sprout destroys your shield then the entire meter will empty out and turn red. This means you will not be able to use it until the meter fills up again, leaving you vulnerable. It's really important that you keep an eye on this and use your shield tactically, otherwise, you could be putting yourself in a precarious position.

Counter the Attacks

One of the magical things about your shield is that if you time it right, it can counter a big boss attack.

With Sprout, wait until it has lifted its sword above its head and as it moves to swing it you should activate your shield. If timed perfectly, Kena will counteract the attack which gives you enough time to escape.

Dodge and Run

Sometimes it's not possible to get a clean shot at Sprout, this is where dodging comes in. Wait until Sprout is close to you before dodging out of the way. If you dodge too early then it can anticipate where you'll end up in the area and aim its attacks in that direction.

If this happens then simply run away from it. Sprout is fast but the area you're fighting in is large enough for you to get far enough away from it to be safe for a short amount of time.

Blind Sprout With the Rot

Your adorable little sidekicks are very useful when it comes to fighting enemies, Sprout included. Aim at Sprout then use your Rot command button to get them to swamp and blind it for a short time.

When Sprout is being blinded it will not attack you. This is the perfect time to get a few strong hits on Sprout or multiple weaker hits on it. Either way, using the Rot is a brilliant idea.

Whack, Rinse and Repeat

The only way to get truly defeat Sprout is to wear its health bar down to nothing. The health bar will be at the top of your screen so you can keep an eye on it throughout your battle:

Don't let your guard down whilst you're attacking it. Sprout can and will still swing at you whilst it's taking damage, therefore if you see it raising its sword then it's best to get out of there.

The goal is simple, hit Sprout more than it hits you. So whack, rinse and repeat but make sure you're not sacrificing your health!

There are a variety of enemies that you will face off against in Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Sprout is just one of them. Knowing how to save your game will be beneficial in case it takes a few attempts to take Sprout down.
