The issue has now been resolved!
"January 13th 9am PT: We're currently experiencing Connection Lost errors that seem to be connected to the Knight Bus. We're actively working on a fix and we will share an update soon."
The connection issue has been noted by Niantic Support themselves and they are busy working on a fix.
